about trends/style

always trying

anyone know what designer, or who, said Trends are over--people just wear what they want? Was in my OC Register a week or so ago.

In a way this seems to be true,,or is it just that there are so many STYLES around.

IMO-the big new trend seems to be comfort! Seems we are all going for comfort, especially in jeans, pants, and footwear. more elastic waist soft pants, joggers, etc. sneakers galore, more flat sandals, etc. Of course comfort is an individual thing, so what is very comfortable to one, may be totally awful for someone else. maybe this is why there are so many kinds of everything so we can all find our comfort level to find our own individual styles!!!!

My credo is that I find my style and let the trends try to fit my style...Wearing a trend just because everybodyelsedoesit just doesn't seem right to me..
I would prefer to wear a trend that accents my style..so that who I am projecting is even clearer with the addition of the trend piece...
The comfort factor has lost its appeal to me after watching What Not to Wear and seeing a bevy of ladies who proclaimed that the awful piece they were wearing was "comfortable"...Do you remember that?...
So much to consider...so much fun...

You don't have to look frumpy to be comfy. That's my take on it. Chronic pain rules everything I do and everything I wear, unfortunately. That said, I manage not to look like the unstylish lades featured on that WNTW episode. And yes, I remember it.

Comfort is definitely important to me, I can't stand wearing something that feels uncomfortable. That said, comfort doesn't mean sweatpants, sneakers etc. to me! You can be very comfortable in pieces other people perceive as "dressy", if your things fit you well and were chosen with care. So I don't think the wish for comfort is an excuse for wearing super casual (or worse sloppy) clothing on occasions / in places it's inappropriate.

Doesn't this answer your question AT? Aren't we all just playing within a hobby field or art, or game or narrative that we accept the trivial nature of in the scheme of things but enjoy nonetheless?

Trends seem less rigid these days, it's true. Even the school kids don't seem to be as subject to the same 'everyone must have this item' fads that I recall from my childhood. I think the Internet helps; you can see what's going on in other places and things get diffused. Stuff goes viral but then it gets supplanted pretty quickly too.

I think it's rather true. I don't see trends on the street - as in fads. The magazines (and perhaps the designers and stores) seem to be trying to push some things as trends - gingham, rose gold, cricket sweaters, lug soles, fringe - but I don't see them gaining traction with anyone but me! Lol.

Archer, I like your take on it, and enjoy exploring trends for fun. The clothing styles that predominate in my area are fairly slow to change and seem to be relatively stable markers of subculture affinity.

I was wondering about this seeing yet another sea of hectic 70's boho wear marketed to juniors in shops again this spring (and last summer), and yet I haven't actually seen any juniors walking around wearing it. Even when I'm driving around the high schools and middle schools during lunch break. I always see more that is unchanging (hoodies, skinnies, lace up booties and converse) than in flux.

I live in a rather affluent community that paradoxically is very slow to adopt new trends ... except for the ones I wish they wouldn't, such as leggings worn as pants. But hey, I don't have to dress like they do, and that's what's so fun about fashion these days. You don't have to worry about fitting in unless you have a career or lifestyle that calls for specific attire.
