Just wanted to share a few pics from our family weekend off the grid. It was pretty amazing (family arguments notwithstanding). This hostel is run like a little agrarian community from generations past. They operate on zero or near-zero waste, and there is a stillness to the land. We took showers in a system that included filling a 2-gallon watering can with water heated naturally through tubing laid under compost -- the can was then rigged so that you pulled the spout towards yourself to shower. Simple and effective. Amazingly, two gallons is all I needed for a full shower! The toilet was a sawdust composting outhouse, odor-free and non-waste producing. And the food was simple but delicious fare served family style and enjoyed as a group around an outdoor fire. The couple built the incredible house by hand, using techniques from days gone by. It was really special and frankly the perfect balance for NAS.
