Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

A possible tunic/dress

The search for a tunic dress continues!

Yesterday I picked up this Stella McCartnery number from Myer. What do you think? I would like to be able to wear it with tights, and jeans/skinny pants.

Its made out of an elastane fabric which worries me a bit as I'm normally a cotton gal. It wasn't overbearingly hot this morning when I tried it on for these pictures so I'm trying to be positive. Speaking of mornings please excuse the uncombed bed-hair!

First pics are the dress itself from front and side.

This size fits quite snug around the underbust but great over bust, underarms and shoulders. The size up felt a bit too gapy up there. Mum said she might be able to undo the back darts and let it out a bit. Does it look too tight?

Next pics are with the belt it came with - a very wide belt. I am scared of belts as I think I am quite short waisted as well as being apple shaped. Do you think I can wear a belt this size??

Last pic is the dress over jeans. Does it work as a tunic or does it look too much like a dress?

Thanks for your help! I'm so indecisive about this one!!

I love your hair all curly like this. (I like it straight too!).

The tunic is cute but it does look a bit snug. If your mom can take it out, that would be great. I don't know about you, but if something is too tight, I won't wear it.

The belt - I do like it belted but I wonder if this belt isn't simply too wide for you? Could you try a thinner belt? Even a skinny belt might work better.

I do love this over jeans. I will wait and see what Angie says but I suspect you are young enough you can get away with wearing this length as a dress too. I would just wear it with flats, not heels. Your yellow flats would be perfect!

It does look a tiny bit snug. If you can let it out a bit, I would do it. It doesn't look like you need a lot more space, so if you just let it out a tiny bit, it will probably be perfect.

I do not prefer it belted, but that's because I generally don't prefer anything belted unless you're long-waisted or have a very defined waist. But don't give up on it if you like the look. You might want to try a skinnier belt.

I think it's too long for a tunic, even though it is a short dress. Maybe it's because I already saw it as a dress before I got to the tunic picture.

It's very cute though!

Oh, before I forget, I also wanted to add that every time I think of your name and the fact that you are Australian, I am reminded of delicious Tim Tams. My friend used to ship me several boxes at once, but now she lives in Germany and I'm being deprived :(

Hi Yublocka,
I think that the dress is adorable. It looks a bit snug from the front but not from the side. I think that it would be worth having taken out. I prefer it without a belt, I think that the detail around the neckline is enough happening. The jeans seem to baggy for that dress, either really skinny jeans or tights would work better, IMO.
I really like the look on you!

I really like it, and I think it looks great both with jeans and on its own. I actually like it with the belt. I agree with GG about letting it out.

It's a very pretty dress Tam. I agree about letting it out a bit. I prefer it unbelted, on it'd own as a dress.

I think I'm odd man out here. I don't love this dress. I am very confused by the pleat in the front--it looks odd and uncomfortable. Also, I don't care for the puffy sleeve--the band at the bottom looks too snug. I am not loving this shade of grey either.

But I do think you look great in a tunic over jeans.

It's a very nice dress, but I agree with the others that it looks a tad snug. I think that'd be uncomfortable after a bit. I like it with the belt and actually think the wide belt looks fine. It is a tad short for my taste.

As for the wearing with pants, have you tried it with the skinnies you posted in my "skinnies for work" thread? Those seem like they'd be great. They would also probably take care of the issue Jean raises about the jeans seeming too baggy. More than that, I think the jeans just don't have the same kind of "feel" as the dress, which is more tailored. At least to my eye, they seem a little incompatible.

It looks fabulous with the jeans and the belt, Tam! I love you in this look. I agree that it's a little snug. Can Mum help out?

I personally think it's a really pretty dress. I like it with the belt and the jeans but think it would be nice as a dress as well.

Thanks for the input everyone - much appreciated! I think I'll def. get my Mum to take it out. She said the darts culd go out at least an inch each - there's no way I need that much extra. I might try it with a smaller belt to see how that looks - I don't own a skinny belt though.

Looks like opinion is 50/50 as to whether it works over jeans. That's enough for me to try and wear it that way to dress it down I think! Although Alecia I think your suggestion of the black skinny pants is spot on. Jean I agree those skinnies are too baggy - they're at least a size too big now, more so when they are due for a wash. They are on my "to replace" list - probably in April!!

Tanya, Angie and Juli I'm glad you like it a dress. Sounds like its passable as a tunic, so I'm happy about that!

Shiny I don't like wearing things that are tight and uncomfy either. This material is very stretchy, so I don't think that will be an issue here (hope not!!) Wearing it as a dress I'd def. pair it with boots and probably tights - wouldn't have that much leg on display don't worry! :)

Maya if you get desperate for a shipment of TimTams just let me know. There's lots of limited edition flavours in stores atm!! Maybe I could add it to a ylf swap item? :) I have a few things in mind actually, just need time to post them!

Nicole don't worry I kind of get what you mean about the pleat. It is actually very "floppy" fabric, so not at all umcomfy. I think what I really love is the drape of the skirt - covers my problem stomach area!
