So my usual walk takes me by the Seattle zoo. Normally I walk by before they're open. Today I was late and saw many mothers streaming into the entrance. None were nearly 1/2 as fab as the mothers on here. A preponderance of gear was the dominant theme.

Yes, the MOTGs on our forum have raised the bar and I applaud them for demonstrating that fashion and motherhood need not be mutually exclusive.

I know what you mean Maya. I'm always slightly irked when i see a kiddo dressed to the nines meanwhile the mom standing next to her/him looks like she hasn't even brushed her hair. I want to be like, "dont give up!!!"

It does take effort though, and some days, it's hard to muster that energy...I feel for those moms because sometimes I'm one of them!

Thank you, Anna! Yes, it can feel like so much work to get yourself together when you are schlepping around with the kids, but it is worth it (though I hope there were no hidden cameras on me today when I was at the garden center with my daughter, wearing denim cut-offs, a t-shirt, and some grubby gardening sandals!).

Sometimes (more often than I'd like) I do what MamaPickleJuice says. I find even when I'm looking rough I can still show my style though! There's one special trick to that: see photos

(psst - my 1st time with photos. I went mad with power so please ignore if too many - also, if they don't work, ignore - I'll fix them!)

Edit: damn, I made them too small. I think I'm too worn out to resize them right now!

Thanks Anna! This was me for the last 5 years. It's hard to justify spending time and money on yourself when there's so much other stuff to be done. Eventually I had to block out some of the noise and focus on me.

Fruitful, I love all of your baby-wearing slings (I don't know if that is the right term). It's great that you have so many colors and patterns. Your back muscles must be amazing from wearing that baby so much!

I do think the MOTGs look great on this forum. I'm doing much better at not being one of the moms in gear, though I think that for the zoo, it's easy to underestimate how much like a hardcore workout dragging two (or more) small children around is. I find myself sweating far more at that kind of outing than I do when I'm actually working out. (Though, come to think of it, that might say more about my workouts...)

What I want to know is: how do all of you MOTGs stay clean for more than 2 minutes? I am constantly covered in unidentified gunk that I can only imagine comes from my children.

crwilson - i stuff about a 1000 shout wipes in my purse. Unfortunately most of that is just for my clumsiness, not my kids messiness XD

And i wasn't saying that moms should be amazingly fab all the time. There were plenty of days when my son was a newborn where i couldn't even find time to shower. I'm just saying if you've got your kid all sorts of glammed out maybe pull it back a little bit and put just a tiny bit of time into yourself too.

@ crwilson- best way to keep yourself clean is to give the children to the daddy to take care of :0)
I personally have no love for gear but still find dificult to put my best casual clothes for a trip to the zoo.

crwilson, my saviors are printed fabrics that camouflage the smears, drips and mysterious smudges that come with kiddo territory far better than block colors!
Every mum has days when looking good is a seriously low priority, but it's amazing what a boost it can give you to choose something pretty.
And Angie's MOTG outfits are so easy - not much harder than throwing on sweats once you have the right pieces,
Now, actually shopping with kiddos - if you don't go online - is definitely a challenge. I once bought each of mine a cheap new book and strapped them into the double stroller so I could get myself some decent underwear. Totally worth it.
