80's weekend in Chicago - YouLookFab Forum

Hello friends!

We're going to Chicago for a weekend in November. We'll be seeing BOY GEORGE at the DAVID BOWIE exhibit at the MCA. So excited! Looking for a few quick suggestions. Are the any MUST SEE stores or spots on or near the Miracle Mile? I haven't been to Chicago in close to 10 years so I am really not sure what's going on there. I am hoping to spend some time at Millennium Park if the weather is good. I would also appreciate any suggestions for how to dress for the weather... I tried to look at historical records for Chicago in November and it looks like temperatures range from the 70's down to the teens?!?!? How do you even plan for that?! Thanks in advance for any thoughts, sightseeing, food or travel capsule suggestions!

I'm thinking about wearing some variation of this outfit for the Boy George thing.

If you like Greek food - head over to the Greek quarter. The food is sensational. Lunch time is fab, and evenings are festive.

The Rack in Chicago is really good too, as is the very fancy Nordstrom. I love the Bloomies there best though. More manageable and swanky.

As for the weather, pack the day before and watch the weather like a hawk. Have a great time. xo

Eep, your outfit is very cute. Definitely a chance to bust out gender-bending daytime glam. Tell us about the exhibit and show pics if you get a chance. Wish I could see it!

Yep. The weather can be anything. Don't pack too early and keep your eye on the forecast!

For food: When you want a quick bite in the midst of shopping, I suggest hitting Naf Naf Grill (two locations: one near the Bean, and one near the train station in the loop). They are the "Chipotle of the Near East" with fabulous and fresh Shwarma. Then, of course, there are Rick Bayless' Topolobampo and Frontera Grill. These are terrific for a bit of Mexico on Lake Michigan! Angie is spot on about Greek town, too! it's just west of the Loop.

For shopping: There are two Racks: one near Macy's on State Street and one up near Water Tower, near the tiny park on the west side of Michigan Ave. Another love for the Chicago Nordies, too. I always hit Crate and Barrel, too. Great for a little early Christmas shopping!

Nothing better than Millennium Park on a nice day! Just across Michigan Ave. is the Chicago Cultural Center -- housed in an old Rockefeller Library building. There are lovely free small art exhibits housed there, as well as a visitor center and terrific free concerts. This is a great place if it's a bit cold on the day you visit the Park.

The museums in Chicago are all world class --- the Art Institute is near Millenium Park, and you can at least walk past those iconic lions on your way up the boulevard to shop!

I'm so jealous!! We lived in Chicago for a year about 10 years ago and haven't managed to make it back yet. The first thing I think of is the food and I second Angie to take yourself to the Greek district for dinner. Yum!!! Also, I always tell people visiting to go the Aurelio's if they want pizza. That's where the locals went that we knew and is SO much better than the touristy pizza places. It's a thin crust not deep dish. Delish!!!

Thanks for the great advice! We are staying near the fancy Nordstrom's so I'm sure we will end up there at some point.

Sounds like so much fun! I adore Chicago. I love Bloomingdales and the Macy's on State Street. I 2nd Beth Ann's suggestion of the Chicago Cultural Center and the Art Institute. I love the architecture in the library too. Sometimes we stay at the Omni but even when we don't stay there, I go to the restaurant there to have breakfast or lunch. They have large windows overlooking Michigan Ave. It's a great break from all the walking and the food is delicious and you can just sit back and watch all the street traffic. Enjoy!
