Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

3/4 puffer - how critical? (timely - free shipping from Macy's today)

I am really looking to revamp my wardrobe, and right now I have 3 coats - 1 long gray wool, 1 car coat length black wool and one short red puffer, in this style: http://cdni.llbean.com/is/imag.....mp;hei=295

I've seen a big emphasis on 3/4 length puffers - and I have two young kids and expect to spend a lot of time outside this year in the snowy season...I'm thinking that a 3/4 puffer is probably the way to go, but it does seem a bit extravagant, given that I have a newish puffer from red year - just not really the right length. My upper body would be warm, but forget sitting on a bench somewhere and watching the kids play - too cold!

This is the one I've been eyeing - and there's free shipping from Macy's until midnight tonight for coat purchases over $99: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/.....x-xx.index

On sale, a pretty charcoal color (so not black, which I find a bit difficult to wear)...would look great with my new 20-eyelet docs...

General background - I'm looking to upgrade my stay-at-home-mom wardrobe from sporty to sleek...

Thoughts???

It's a nice coat, but that's a hefty pricetag. Last year, I found a nice 3/4 length puffer at Kmart- marked down to 40% off. It ended up being around $40, and it had real down filling. My friend who bought a much more expensive version likes mine better, and it's warmer too.

Okay, cool. I'll keep looking then! :)

Do you have a Macy's store within driving distance? The reason I ask is that I was very impressed with Macy's return policy - I ordered a dress awhile back, and while it didn't work out quite as well as I'd hoped, I'm happy that I can return this item any time in the next *six months*. Pretty generous return policy - and I guess the only thing you'd need to consider is 'ease of return' if you were to order the coat.

Speaking of which - very neat colour and it looks like a fab coat. Thing is, I just got back from trying on a *ton* of coats (not at Macy's) and was really surprised at what worked and what didn't. I think a coat is one of those things that you really need to try on.

That said, Macy's has a very good return policy - so you can 'try on' at home and then return to your nearest Macy's store if need be.

Hi MPJ! I love the puffers you’ve linked to (although you’ll never know if they’re flattering until you’ve actually tried them on). Silver grey is an excellent idea!

“Laundry” does exceptional quality and I think that’s quite a good price for a Laundry puffer jacket. While I cannot directly compare it to Kmart’s puffers and I may stand corrected, I can’t imagine that it’s the same quality. On this particular item, I think you get what you pay for. I would order it and see how you like it - and then compare it to cheaper items.

Those are a pair of really pretty puffers. I like the grey better than the blue, but they each have their own appeal.

I have tryied some and simply hate the look, they add so much volume, but i'm petite, maybe if you are tall and sllim you can pull the look.

Well, I dithered too long (past midnight) - so free shipping is out - and I was too stupid to see if it was even available locally (it isn't) - so it's out - I can't be bothered to order one size at a time to try it out.

Has anyone ordered the chevron 3/4 coat from LL Bean? I'm thinking of it in black or mulberry.

I'm also going to check out tj maxx today. :)

Well to answer your original question, I feel that a knee-length puffer is pretty critical as MOTG -- it's the coat that gets worn the most in my closet from about Thanksgiving to, well, Easter :) That's Chicago for ya.

Ha ha - those dates sound right for MA, too.

Well. I made it to TJ Maxx and found a Laundry puffer - black, fugly faux collar (mercifully detatchable), no hood but right length. Oh my - so thin! No warmth at all.

A puffer did come home with me - 3/4 length, hood, super warm and...wait for it...CREAM. hahahahahaha. This ought to be good. I expect it to last in its pristine condition until the tags come off, at which point it will become a magnet for all things drippy and staining.

I will add a picture soon for YLF approval/critique. ;-)

ETA: Here is the link to the coat online - identical except for the neck lining in mine is not orangey, it's cream - also, the TJ Maxx price was less than half that: http://www.cloudveil.com/women.....ket--6131/
