I think a green velvet dress sounds lovely! A dress would be more special than separates. I would think you might have some luck with the holidays approaching but retailers seem so conservative with colors this season and so all we are seeing is grey and black which is why I also think vintage might be a good bet. If velvet doesn't work, would you settle for a dark/emerald green taffetta or some kind of non-shiny silk? I would suggest that you check out the bridesmaid dresses at some of the bridal collections at: J Crew, Ann Taylor, Jessica McClintock and traditional bridal stores.

One of the bloggers at academichic.com recently got married and bought an alternative to a wedding dress at an affordable price. Hers was champagne silk, not velvet, but her suggestions may be helpful to you. The link is http://www.academichic.com/200.....ing-dress/

Also check eBay--you can search for "green velvet dress" and select formal dresses. Hit or miss, but you can have fun "window shopping" online! Try Etsy.com, too.

Also--if you find the right thing at an eBay, thrift or consignment price, you can have it altered and still end up with something that's budget-friendly.

ElsaMarie, I just saw this on the Nordstrom website and thought of your wedding. It's not velvet, and I'm not sure how dark the green would be in person, but maybe it's worth a look?

I’m all for non- traditional looking wedding attire and I like the sound of your plan. Velvet sounds perfect. I’d check out thrift stores and the Macys sales racks. Try vintage clothing sites as well.

Have you considered finding a seamstress and having a dress made? I have never done this, so I'm not sure how long it takes, but it might be worth it to ask around. It seems like you have such a clear vision of what you want, that having it made might make sense.

I read these forums all the time but have generally been shy to post. Hello!

I am getting married in January. It's going to be very small and simple. There will be only 10 people. We plan to stay all stay in a cozy lodge somewhere in the mountains and get married in a pretty room with a fireplace. I want to wear something special, but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to buy a traditional wedding dress. My fiancee will probably wear brown slacks, a dark blue sweater, collared shirt and a tie. Picture a scruffy academic with curly red hair =).

My dream dress would be dark green, maybe velvet, elegant but not a gown or something too sexy. I could also wear a skirt and top, but putting together outfits intimidates me. I am 25, and I'm in grad school so I can splurge a little but not too much. I'm somewhere between a pear and an hourglass.

I am not very good at shopping and don't know where to even start looking, so any suggestions or ideas would be wonderful. Thank you!
