I found a great grey false-plain suit at Mexx. I really like it. It's a jacket and pants, and I also got a matching sheath dress. I'll return it (the dress at leas--I'm going to wear the suit tomorrow) if I don't get the job, but if I do, all 3 pieces will be workhorses for sure.

Good Luck and Congrats on the interview.

I agree with the err on the side of caution approach. I liked to wear skirts (with hose or tights and closed toe shoes) on interviews. I didn't really have any jackets, so I opted for cardigans instead.

I also think boots with a skirt is interview worthy, so long as the boots are in good condition. A button down collared shirt is always your best bet, whether you wear a jacket or cardigan or vest.

Good luck!

I just tried on the black jacket again and concluding that it is not fab. The fit is not right (I bought it pre-YLF). It will go up for swap once I find my camera and a chunk of time to do that.

Thanks, shell, for the photos! You looked great--I love that ruffled white blouse.

Shiny, my thoughts are the same as yours--err on the more formal side because of what the job itself is. I'm going to go out and do some shopping. I'll bring along the pinstripe pencil skirt and my black pumps in case I find anything that might work with those items, but I'm afraid the blue of the skirt especially will be a tough colour to work with for a jacket. It's lighter than navy and I think I can wear my black pumps with it if need be. Otherwise I'll look for a suit and a top to go with it (maybe a silky tie-neck or subtly ruffled type of blouse). Maybe Club Monaco still has their amazing sale on. I love their stuff so much.

Brianna, since it's for a position as a career advisor, I recommend you pull out all the stops and dress to impress. I.e., a suit skirt - doesn't necessarily have to match; I like Angie's suggestions of grey or charcoal so you can wear your black pumps. If a pants suit, I would err on the conservative side and have it match.

My reasoning is that you will be expected to set an example for the students you will be advising. Definetly show off your great style, but I'd err on the side of more formal for this particular interview.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!!!

I would wear something that you feel really great in. If I were you, I'd wear the black blazer with a white button down, and then find some trousers or a pencil skirt in a coordinating color. I have some grey trousers with an eggplant pinstripe. This is my go-to suit/professional outfit at present.
Good luck!

first of all, good luck tomorrow, brianna!

now, for the outfit.... the fun part!

the dark blue pencil skirt sounds nice - i love little details like a kick pleat at the back! could you try it with a cardigan and a nice white button down shirt? you could do a grey cardigan for something basic or a brighter color if you think it'll be appropriate.

Oh that dark blue pencil skirt sounds great Brianna. But that probably won't work with the black blazer. Do you have a waistcoat that would go with the skirt? Then perhaps you could wear that over your white tuxedo-style shirt?
A colourful bag, shoes and accessories, and I think you got yourself an outfit;-)

I always recommend (and follow the advice for myself as well) dressing up more for an interview. Even if you know everyone else is going to be wearing jeans, you want to show to them that you're taking this seriously and that you know how to look professional and appropriate when the occasion calls for it. After all, they're meeting you for the first time (usually). They're all well aware of how the interview process works, so they're expecting you to dress up more than you usually would. Separates are fine as long as you look tailored, I think (at least I hope, because I don't have a suit so I always go with separates to interviews). A grey skirt might soften up things more than a full black suit.

Whatever you go with, I'm sure you'll be fine, Brianna. You have fantastic style! Just make sure whatever you wear is comfortable--the last thing you want is to be picking at your clothes when you're meant to be focused on telling them how awesome you are.

Wow! I'm excited for you Brianna.

I'd try to get a pencil skirt to match your black blazer, but not necessarily black. Slacks are a good idea too, but again, not necessarily back. That way you can wear your black pumps. Try grey, charcoal or caramel. Pinstripes are a good option too. What are you going to wear under your blazer? How about a crisp button down shirt?

A suit is never a bad idea. I’d encourage that too. Keep us posted!

I would err on the side of conservative, that is a suit. Since it is in arts school, I'd add a pretty bright blouse. So, H&M might have a simple charcoal pantsuit, and with a bright/patterned blouse, and simple black pumps, I think it would be a great interview look.

I have an interview for a potentially awesome job tomorrow afternoon. The position is Career Services Advisor at an post-secondary arts school. I've been working from home for the last 6 months so I don't have a lot of career clothes. The friend who works there and who let me know about the job opening says the dress code is business casual, basically just no jeans. What should I wear? A suit, or separates? I am willing to buy whatever I need and plan to go out later this afternoon to shop.

I currently have three white button-down shirts: one fitted and plain, one with a tie at the back (so no layering), and one tuxedo-style that is very good quality. I also have a black ruffle button-down shirt. I have one black cotton sateen blazer, and a black poly pencil skirt. I bought the blazer last year at a sample sale for Artitzia, so I may go there and see if they have any skirts or pants in the same fabrication. Otherwise, I'll try a couple of consignment stores or the usual downtown shops (Zara, BR, H&M, the Bay--a department store, Club Monaco, etc.) I need shoes too--should I stick with basic black pumps?

Help please!
