For the skirts you've posted in the closet cleanout, I liked 11, 12 and 16. About styles other than pencil skirts, I especially like summer skirts with the top part narrow like a pencil skirt and a bit of gathering (not much) or pleats at the lower half for a bit of fullness. Inverted pleats can work. I like my white and dark denim pencil skirts for summer because the fabric is heavy enough not to need lining or slip. I have brought out a few cowl-neck pieces, purchased one tunic, and gingerly started wearing skinny jeans more often (the latter of which I've had for two years but am shy about wearing them, and it took me another year before that until I found a pair that worked on me.) I haven't put much effort into finding leggings that worked on me (I got discouraged after trying several pairs that looked awful either because they were too sheer/not the right style/tried on with the wrong thing.) I haven't looked for a banded top because I didn't think I'd like the shape (and frankly, I have a lot of tops already), but with Kristen's demonstration of how fab a curvy gal can look in banded blouses, I'm thinking I may at least try a few on in a dressing room.</p> <p>I also want to note that I *have* made some success not in breaking out of my uniform, but adding to it so I feel more fab, largely through accessories. I'm still learning how to do this, but am realizing more and more how experimenting with the finishing touches (a statement necklace, a belt in the right place, a floral pin) can make me feel more creative and not as bored with my established style. Accessories can allow me to try *something* new even if the newest shape/style is too unkind to my curves for me to wear it.</p> <p>Angie, thank you too for kindly stepping in to add your perspective on what should stay and what should go. I think the verdict is pretty clear now. </p> <p>You have all convinced me to keep the teal dress around. I feel (and look) so much sleeker in a pencil skirt because they don't add bulk around the hips and show off my shape. That being said, I feel that pencil skirts are too formal and definitely not breezy enough for casual wear in hot weather (granted, how often do we really get hot weather in Seattle?) I hate to think that a pencil skirt or narrow straight skirt to the knee is the only thing I can wear, ever. </p> <p>I think I should have taken a newer picture of the Romy dress to truly illustrate its problems - unfortunately this was the only full-length pic I could find. It's not totally obvious in the picture, but the top empire seam is actually coming pretty far up into my bustline, and I have to wear a lacy cami under the dress to avoid flashing everyone. If they are just below, technically it looks okay but I don't look quite as "kicky." I think your photos are a perfect demonstration of this: you look 20 lbs lighter in the shorter dresses!! Most are also not hitting you in the right spot, too; 11 and 13 and another are too long, and the handmade one is too short. I thought they were all so cute and summery!)</p> <p>To see what I'm talking about with the extra material dragging you down, compare any of the skirts shots here with how you look in the Express pencil you wore for Mrs. White. I think we have similar body types, and that horizontal thing just cuts us in half. I think that the narrower the a-line, the better for you. Pleats and such tend to add more volume at the bottom. Again, the structure thing. On the Express skirt, the pockets are actually the entire "triangle" area on the hips of that skirt, but the pocket hole is quite high, horizontal to the ground, and hidden by all but the shortest tops.
