Thanks, both of you! I tooled around the REI website and think that a trip to the store is in order to see what feels comfy on. cciele, do you have any experience with Sorels? I've resisted Sorels because they are--well, ugly. But they are functional and toasty warm.

For gear-type shoes, I'm a big fan of REI. They have a great return policy (I've seen people return stuff years old, seriously used, and they take it back!).

I like North Face products:

I have a pair of Kamik "Jemma" winter boots in black suede. No, not fancy, but they're excellent. I think this is an older model, as I couldn't easily find them online. Other alternatives would be the Kamik Glamor or the Boreal. The suede ones really are water and snow-proof. Great 'gear' boots. Very warm and not too expensive. The styles I've mentioned aren't lace up though. In any case see if you can find some Kamik boots that you might like on Endless, Zappos and such.

6pm has some Kamik Boots on sale:

http://www.6pm.com/womens-kamik-boots

And Zappos has the Boreal style:

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7443500/c/621.html

The good thing about Zappos is that you get a lot more details on the product. The Kamik suede is waterproof. I think there *might* be a few Kamik boots that lace up...but it'll take some doing to find some that you like. The ones you first found are very nice-looking snowboots - too bad your size sold out. Ack! hate it when that happens.

No complaints about the current boots--but this time I'm looking for something closer to gear--something to walk in for exercise in a cold, snowy, icy Midwestern winter. I found some I liked at onlineshoes.com, the Wenger Lady Trapper in brown, (http://www.onlineshoes.com/wom.....p_id161913) but they sold out in my size before the order was filled! Drat, drat, drat.

I'm looking for something that's waterproof, will be warm down to 0 degrees, that has a sole similar to the Wengers, and that laces up. Ankle boots are fine--the Wengers just happen to be taller. I've been looking at brands like Earth, Keen, and Bastien (of course, La Canadienne has some, but $300 is a bit much for gear).

Suggestions, please? Especially from those of you who live in climates with really cold, snowy winters.
