Shipping is my main problem, Stringy. Sometimes I end up using ebay shops to ship things for me, if they have them in stock. I'm dying for a pair of Kenneth Cole sandals I saw on this site (the cedar city ones, in brick) but of course, no one ships here.

I use countryroad.com.au just to look - you can't buy online from them, like so many other stores here, and Netaporter.com just to look and salivate. I can rarely affford, sigh.

I've got no problem ordering stuff from overseas, if they ship to Australia. Well, other than my usual problem with ordering online, which is figuring out the fit and dealing with returns.

The Nordstrom shipping does sound pretty pricey! Free is always better, will definitely take a look at shopbop.com then :)

Thanks Anne for those - I hadn't looked at Target or Just Jeans online for so long because they used to have such silly websites, they're much improved now. I'd never seen ezibuy.com.au before at all, looks very useful!

Blah, I just tried adding a random dress from Nordstrom.com to my shopping cart and checking out.....shipping is $66. You'd have to buy a lot of stuff to justify that price - crazy!!!!

As of today Nordstrom ships internationally (incuding Australia). Woohoo!! (Although I don't know what the shipping costs are)

Shopbop.com has free shipping to us here as well.

Or did you want only stores actually located in Australia?

In another thread some of us Aussie gals were thinking that it'd be nice to pool our shopping resources. We don't have the huge range of choices that are available overseas, but there's definitely good stuff out there. If you've found a good website or blog or heard about something nifty that works Down Under, please feel free to jump in and share!

I like to look at clothing ranges online to narrow down my choices before trying stuff on. Here's my favourites:

http://www.witchery.com.au - excellent quality

https://shop.sportsgirl.com.au/index.html - great for up-to-the-minute accessories, but the styles are often a bit extreme for my tastes (if only I were 19 again!)

http://www.frenchconnection.com.au/ - sale items are often down to 60% of original price

http://www.jeanswest.com.au/Womens.html - for denim and fashion tees

For shoes I like:
http://wittner.com.au/

http://www.zomp.com.au/ - website has been 'coming soon' for a year now. And their shoes are super-expensive. But when stuff goes on sale, it really goes on sale. I've bought sandals that were $145 down to $40.

OK - your turn now!

Let's see, I have tried the new Gap jeans, but didn't fall in love with them. At the time, though, I wasn't seriously in the market for skinny jeans so maybe they're worth another shot. Other than the ATL jeans (which were an absolute disaster), I've tried various jeans from from Dillards, but I can't remember specifically which ones. Not very helpful, huh? :)

I'm going to search out the Elson next time I'm shopping-thanks for the suggestions, Angie! I have the COH Amber and really like them.

Those Naturalizer boots look great. I have wider calves as well. I've found that I have better luck with pull on boots then boots with zippers. It seems counterintuitive but that's been my experience.

Hi Sarah, I missed your thread the first time around, but wanted to extend my welcome as well!

I also have thick calves (I'm pretty close to your calf size, actually.) Tara, one of the forum members who used to be more active on the site, pointed me towards Rockport Ainly boots. I got a pair last year in "Brandy", and they are my absolute favorite boots. They were quite tight at first, but stretched to perfect comfort after a couple wears.

I think that Tara also has the Rockport Archmount, or else she mentioned that they fit similarly. (I haven't tried them but have a recollection that she recommended them.)

I tried these on in store (they also come in black) and they fit very well. By the way, right now at Naturalizer, you can get 15% off the sale price by entering promo code "HMKE9". Just wanted to mention that.

I got these B.P. boots about a month ago, and they were a bit snug at first, but also stretched out very well after wearing them around the house with the buckles loosened.

I hope that helps a little!

You know that's not so huge for a calf! Don't let your esteem slide because of that. I became a big fan of Trippen boots a few years ago because of the way they accommodate larger sized calves. They're expensive, I know, but, wow, so well-made and SO comfortable.

See this one:
http://www.pedshoes.com/trippe.....olorID=638

and also this one:
http://www.pedshoes.com/trippe.....olorID=640

Oh, and this one, too:
http://www.pedshoes.com/trippe.....lorID=1551

Honestly, the Trippen shoes I've bought are some of the best in my closet. They hardly show wear at all (and I've had them for years).

Which ones have you tried?
Gap? They redid their jeans line and I have heard good things about their new skinnies. They even fit me with my larger legs, though I found the fabric not stretchy enough.
But if you can name the places you have tried, it might help us think of new places.

Since my last attempt at buying skinny jeans was an Epic Fail, I need to start again from square one. Any suggestions on where to start looking? What brands and styles have worked for you?

My requirments:

My (new) budget is $150. I'd prefer a higher rise in a dark denim. The size of the leg opening doesn't seem to be an issue for my body type (or at least that's my impression from the forum feedback I've received from posting pics). I'm an hourglass, so these jeans need to fit some curves. Oh, and I'd prefer brick and mortar stores, at least for trying on. I don't mind buying online, but I hate the process of buying something, sending it back for another size, etc, etc.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I bought a Tulle coat at Nordstrom Rack and was happy with the quality. It was a twill fabric. I have seen their wool coats at the Rack and the quality is not great. They do better with velveteen, cord or twill. I have a feeling the wool will pill in no time.

I agree with Shiny's #1 recommendation of Ann Taylor Loft. They have plentiful petites there. Tell her to sign up online for coupons (right now they have a 30% off and free shipping friends and family coupon, for example). She'll be able to find loungewear and casual wear that fits for great prices, and everything is on trend. That would be my very first destination!

I really love the styling and attitude of this coat but, on further consideration, will reluctantly pass because I bought a black sateen trench at Nordstroms last year that has lots of wear left in it. *sigh*
If the military trench goes down further in price I'll reconsider. I suspect it may not be the best style anyway with the shoulder detail.

Another suggestion would be Sweet Pea tops or that type in another brand. I just got some at SteinMart on sale that are a Sweet Pea knock off for less than $10 each with a newspaper coupon (reg. $68). These tops can take lots of abuse and need no ironing. I wash mine out by hand but you could put them in a lingurie bag in the washer and hang to dry. They can be worn year round if you pop a turtleneck under them and look dressier than most knit tops. The nylon mesh fabric is probably impossible to stain. I've seen some similar styles in polyester rather than nylon. They are ok but nylon is more comfortable in warm weather.

I have very broad shoulders, Joy, and although I love this coat, I have found that any detail at or near the shoulder tends to draw attention there and that is the exact opposite of what I want, you may not have the same problem as I do, but I just thought I would give you my opinion....

My days with sticky hands are over, but I'm also petite so I will suggest these places, which are good for petites:

- Ann Taylor Loft
- Ann Taylor Outlet - I have one near me (I wish I had a BR outlet!); quality is on par with ATL. Worth a try.
- Gap petites and Gap Outlet
- Old Navy petites
- H&M
- Forever21
- Target now offers petites. I did order two cardigans from them (my local Target does not carry petites in store). Price can't be beat, fit was pretty good, quality was worth the price. Worth a try for sure.
- Inc Petite line from Macy's. It's young, it's fresh, it's fun... and it's cheap when on sale and you have coupons. Have her try the ponte knits - they are like running around in sweatpants but look much nicer.

For shoes, Me-Too brand!!

For hair, it's so hard to advise without seeing her in person.

You mention on another thread that you are 5'2" and have luck at Victoria's Secret. I would LOVE to hear what you have had luck with, and would love any pics if you don't mind sharing!

Ages ago (when my kids were preschool, so easily 12-13 years now) we used to have a VS outlet that sold their clothes. It was only very occasionally anything worked for me: more often, the clothes would fit in the body but the arms would be many inches too long, or the neckline would be way too low... I remember thinking that VS was for really super-tall people!!

I love a lot of things on their site, but haven't ever ordered because of that experience. So I am very interested in hearing what has worked for you! (I am 5'0")

Oh I just found a lightweight t-neck on sale at Kohl's for $9, and a pullover that has a little wool and a little angora at Target for $18. Kohl's had cashmere pullovers for $44, too. I love my boyfriend cardi from Old Navy, and Target has a nice wool flyaway right now that is on sale. I'd see if she can find micro check pants- they are really a versatile piece. If she doesn't like boots, what about booties? They are perfect for this time of year, and can be dressed up or down.
I think that my basic bob is really low maintenance, and because it's a simple style I can go to the cheapie salon and they do a good job on it. My budget salon offers a bang trim for $5, so I get that done between regualar cuts and can go twice as long. It takes me literally about 5 minutes to blow dry my hair, and then I am good to go. I go back to a bob every few years, but I guess it just depends on your face shape/hair texture. I have really straight hair and a round face.

thanks so much for all your suggestions! i knew i could count on you ;-)

i just chatted with her this morning, and asked what 3 things were most needed:

1) pants
2) flat shoes sturdy enough for everyday, but a little dressy for sundays
3) tops (knits and button down)

after that:
1) cardigans
2) sweater/pullover
3) fitted cami/shirt to wear under sweaters
4) thin turtleneck for layering

she doesn't really like boots, but maybe i can turn her on to a flat pair ;-)

she used to live in alabama, and did a lot of successful discount/thrift shopping.
for now, she likes target and gap for basics, and when she has time, ross and thrift stores.

do you have any haircut tips as well? she would love to look cute, but wants something low-maintenance. in her opinion, bangs are too much trouble. i told her the side-swept kind are pretty no-fuss, but she had reservations, lol.

anyway, please keep the tips coming, and thanks again.

Hi and welcome! I think that Tulle's quality is good for the price. Definitely size up. I am the same size as Garmenta and always order a M jacket. I NEVER do that in any other brand.

Bumping this once more. Welcome to the forum by the way. I've no personal experience with Tulle either, but have heard a number of ladies say that the sizes do run small, just like Garmenta pointed out. Something to keep into account.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer your question about this type of coat working for broad shouldered lasses or not, but I just had to say that it's a gorgeous coat and I'm 100% convinced that you could pull this off at any age Joy!

Hi Joy! I love this jacket, and I definitely think you could pull it off, even over 60. No problem. It's very chic and understated, but still has some spunk.

I have broad shoulders and tend to stay away from this styling as well, but I have had some military styles work for me. It really just depends on the item, and I can only tell when I have it on. I think you should order this and give it a try! :D
