I bought my first pair of tall boots almost exactly a year ago, and until six months ago, that was the only pair I owned. I believe Angie asked me at one point how I'd survived living in Seattle without boots, and the truth is that I just accepted wet pant hems as a fact of life.

Fortunately, in the past year I have managed to acquire a total of four pairs of boots that fit my calves. as winter comes on, I'm glad that I have so many since I can't stop wearing them! I realized that I only wore non-boots once in the past week.

I'm interested to hear your assessment of whether the more rugged boots can work with skirts, particularly the ones I wore on Friday. The weekend prior I also wore my Rockport boots with a skirt simply because it was too rainy to wear anything else. Any thoughts?

Here's a follow up to my conference travel post for the academics on the forum.

How much you dress is completely a choice in an academic environment and it can get hard to balance. Although I'm not an expert, I think over the years I figured out a way to feel like myself and look good without coming across as too dressed up. It is possible to dress up the way you like and still fit in using a few tricks. Suits made out of individuals pieces, boots or understated quality footwear and casual pieces mixed with dressier items always work. Here are my choices for the week.

Day 1 was a workshop day. Workshops are generally smaller venues with colleagues you get to know for a long time and they are for discussion topics of mutual interest. A business casual attire is generally the best choice. So I ended up pairing my dark wash jeans with a shirt and cascading cardigan. Here's a picture: http://i581.photobucket.com/al.....temp-1.png

Day 2 was my presentation day where I had to emphasize my managerial roles so I picked a more dressy outfit. I feel a bit overdressed and uncomfortable in full suit+shirt+stilettos combinations in academic venues unless it is a cocktail or an inauguration type of event. Tomorrow I'm meeting a funder so I'll go for a skirt+blazer+knit top+boot combo. I'll post the picture here when I have it.

I couldn't post for a while. Too many things going on at once.

I'm at a conference this week and thought I'd make a post on academic dressing choices (and why!) on my blog this week.

Here's the travel outfit. Pretty comfy and also wearing the boots saves me luggage space. :)

I put a coat on (also for luggage space...) and a convertible handbag/packpack. I'll post more on that later...

This is a typical outfit for me in that I put on the bare minimum and then stop. If not for YLF, I would be sans interesting eyeglasses and watch!

Just as a note of interest - the leather jacket is getting close to 10 years old...and does anyone recognize that skirt? I want to say it's pretty old, too - but it's semi-casual, so it could be "only" 6 years old? I tended to shop at AT more when I was working, which was around 6 years ago. Both are in fabulous condition, so I hope they're good styles for me.

*** I'm interested in CR feedback, using the CRS ratings, so I can get a benchmark for where I am style wise. ***

I would also love feedback on how to layer, add accessories, vary the outfit, etc.

My ideas are:

I loved what I was wearing today. We had a lot of running around to do, and I was really comfortable and felt good. I like the way the twist of the shirt is just visible above the V of the sweater. I'm finding dressing warm enough challenging as our weather changes, but I had my trench coat today and I was just about perfect with it on outside and off inside.

I bought some clothes yesterday because I badly needed it (you know, when you have no money but realizes that you'll end up naked at the university if you don't buy clothes soon) and I fell in love with this shirt and waistcoat (I never tried on waistcoat because I don't think it looks very good with my body type).

I didn't think I would wear both of them at the same time but I tried... I'm sure about it though...

I found this blazer at Sears bargain centre for $10.00,I 'm happy with it,fits me good I think and I like the color.And the best part was the price ,I didn't want to invest whole lot on it,because I'm not sure how much I will wear it,so this was a great find!

1. I registered for the "myshape" site a few months ago and have been browsing its offering for a while, but had never ordered from it until last week. I found a purple patterned jersey dress that I really liked and happened to have some discounts and coupons that brought the price down a lot. The belt that came with the dress is kind of lame and too slippery to stay put together, but honestly, I think I like the dress better *not* belted anyway. What do you think?

2. I should remember to bite my tongue when I "give up" on finding a certain piece of clothing that works on me, because nearly every time I say such a thing, I end up finding just the right thing. Case in point: I don't know whether I just tried the wrong pieces before or simply needed to let my eyes adjust, but I finally found a cascading cardigan from the junior's (BP) section of Nordstrom that I adore. My mom also liked it so much that she bought one herself in a different color. I'm thinking of duplicating in teal.

3. Finally, as you can see from the above link, I finally made my big budget purchase for fall and ordered a Bratique Helene white woven shirt (the same one that Nicole modeled and reviewed earlier this year.) Honestly, I am VERY impressed with how well it fits, and particularly that the hook and eyes are MUCH easier to deal with than I expected. I'd actually love to duplicate this shirt in black, too.

I wore both one for the ceremony and one for the dinner.

The first one I think I'm going to take it to the tailor and see if he can lengthen it just a bit. I think I'd wear it more.

Pretty boring but thought I would share and assess how bad these day to day outfits actually are.

First one is the tunic that I posted last week, I tried it again with skinnies and different belt, not sure about it though.

Second up, Gap jeans with Green jersey top which has to be layered due to the see through neck line, the vest underneath is too big so it made me look a but bulky, but I intend to get a few tight fitting cami's to do this job in the future. The tops was bought to wear with trousers for work but thought I could wear it more casual too.

Last one is a cotton print skirt that I have had for ages, paired with plain T and heels, its an easy outfit to throw on but does it look a bit bland?! I have a couple of skirts like this I find for where I live it is easy to alter from very hot summer to slightly cooler winter by changing from vests to T's or lightweight knits.

Hopefully when I start earning again I can begin to add new things to my wardrobe, I still have a heart attack at the thought of an unexpected night out etc because I have such a small amount of things that I like I can never find anything to wear.
We have been invited to a leaving party at someone's house on Saturday night and have no idea what to wear. Any suggestions?

I also need to get round to posting some pics of the other things I bought to start work, to get some view on them too.
