I looked at the Sweet Pea tops on sale at my local Nordies yesterday. it's interesting that they were all different from the ones pictured on the Nordstroms site. The store didn't have those. Has anyone tried their kimono sleeve top?

One of my first post-divorce makeover projects was finally dealing with my red, embarrassing skin. I had been seeing the dermatologist for years, trying creams, which helped a little, but it still looked bad. It wasn't until I stopped using soaps and anything with sulfates, stopped chemical sunscreen, started using an oil-cleansing method (I know-sounds crazy) that the big turnaround happened. And while the Dr. did suggest I might be allergic to chemical sunscreen, most of it I discovered through research and the EDS forum. And I also discovered the miracle of jojoba oil- great at reducing inflammation.

I really think each person is different and while it's no fun to try a bunch of different products, it's the only way to find out what works. My suggestion is to first cut out sulfate washes and just be as gentle with your skin as you can be. Even products labeled "for sensitive skin" are too harsh for me.

I'd be happy to talk to you more if you want- good luck with it!

It's Christmas-list-making time, and the #1 item I want to request is a great cross-body bag that will also function as a diaper bag. Can you indulge me and show me what you've seen online (or purchased) recently? Under $250 would be great. Here are my personal requirements, although I'm happy to see any cross-body bags you've loved lately!

- Leather or faux leather--not fabric or vinyl or suede (love patent though)
- Must have a reasonably wide cross-body strap so that the bag will be comfortable even when full of cloth diapering supplies, baby bottles, toys, extra clothes, wallet, makeup bag, etc.
- Must have lots of pockets (ideally interior and exterior, zippered and open) to help me stay organized
- Must have long enough short straps that it can be worn comfortably on the shoulder as well as cross-body
- In black or a versatile color like cobalt, cyan, olive, grass green, charcoal, etc. (no red or white or brown unless it's bitter chocolate brown--Mike says brown bags make him think of the '80s in a bad way).
- Has interesting shape, detail, or texture
- Large but not luggage-sized!
- Relatvely lightweight
- a nice long opening at the top so that it is easy to access contents
- Preferably a zipper closure to keep out rain here in rainy rainy Vancouver
- No patchwork, bows, big ruffles, or other fussy/overtly girly detailing
- pewter, brass, or silver hardware (not gold)

I don't ask for much, do I?

I have mild facial and ocular rosacea. When I was diagnosed about a year ago, the doc immediately had me stop using the harsh facial soap, wipes and exfoliants, since rosacea skin tends to be uber sensitive.

Now I use just Cetaphil wash (i buy generic store brand version) in the shower in the morning, and just warm water no soap in the evening. The doc also had be start using Atralin cream at night, it's a prescription retinoid that particular helps rosacea. Took a couple months before I finally noticed the difference, but it has dramatically improved my skin tone and texture, and I get the redness much less often.

I think you’re spot on, Laura. I also think that the FP hand writing changes every season. Sometimes they’re really bohemian, whereas at other times just trendy. I think what gets to me the most is that FP (like Anthro) charge a lot for knitted merchandise that ends up looking like schmutters in no time at all. I can’t handle it!

However, some seasons I adore the FP collection, whereas at other times it leaves me cold. I see a strong resemblance between the 7 for all Mankind range and FP at the moment.

For a jacket, I would go with a black fitted blazer. That would give you more coverage, and hide the questionable sleeve of the dress. I also agree about sheer hose and heels, rather than tights/boots. Have you tried european stores like H&M, Zara, Club Monaco and Esprit? Angie has said that the European stores tend to run smaller in their cuts.

I can't really picture the dress with the boots you described. I agree with Steph on the hose and pumps or strappy heels. Since you mentioned it will be cold, I would definitely try to find a jacket or cardigan for it as well. I think a picture would really help you get the best critique.

Ok to answer some of your questions........No Im not going to the church as theyre getting married right at the hall. As for the sleeves, well they work for me as I have very thin arms ( think skeletal!) so the sleeve hides the worst part of my arms! Oh & I for got to mention that the dress is chiffon and very flowy but u may not be able to tell in the pic, so it actually looks a bit dressier in person than in the pic. I also hate to admit that the dress looks just about the same on me as it does on the manequin in the pic! I have no idea of what sort of jacket I could wear with this dress?? As for the boots well, I know Im going ti be freezing most of the night & again the boots hide the "bad": part of my legs! The boots are on the dressy side high heeled & suede. Do u think I can dress this whole outfit up a bit and still include the boots? However, when I say casual I mean casual! The only people I know of that will be dressed is the bride groom & wedding party! I tried the dress on with pumps and hose and it does make it look a bit tarty, but with the boots and some jade & silver accessories it looks a bit more up to date. The pumps & hose make it look like a left over 80's dress. AAAGGGHH! I dont know WHY I like this dress, but Im trying to make it work! I think because the whole process of buying a new dress is a horror for me! Im on the thin side 99- 100 lbs and 5'1". Most of what Im able to find in my size looks like Im going to the prom or out to a club! I wear a size zero or a 1 depending on the make. So I can find office clothes or casual clothes but dressy clothes are a horror! I love some of the styles and I know you would think because Im thin I can wear anything but its just not so! Many times when I put them on they look like theyre still on the hanger even tho its my size!I have to tell you I appreciate all the help youre all giving me!!! When I was younger fashion wasnt a problem for me but now that Im older Im running into lots of trouble! So again THANK YOU ALL for helping me with this!

Have you tried any consignment or vintage shops? I have found many timeless dress coats secondhand. My favorite is a red tweed Pendleton I found at vintage shop for $20! :) The wool is so much thicker and more durable than some of the ones I see new in the stores and often they are in very good condition, especially the dressier ones because they were not worn very often by the original owner.

Hello all,

Ugh. My first high school reunion (ten years) is coming up on Thanksgiving weekend. :) I've been shopping like mad and I thought I had settled on the dress below (found at a consignment shop! :) ), but I'm hesitant about whether the color is flattering...Thoughts? What color shoes?? First and 2nd pic are accurate to the color. Third pic (with flash) shows how it looks when light hits.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com.....dd5f_o.jpg

Other options are a taffeta cobalt blue dress I may be bringing home next week (they are sending for my size from another store) but it has cap sleeves that are questionable with my arms...And something about it felt a little old for me but I love the blue and it's on clearance for $23 (!!) .... http://tinyurl.com/ylltqsm (this link is not exact -- slightly different neckline and teal instead of cobalt -- but as close a picture as i could find).

And..... I have a black dress I could accessorize, if need be. But I really wanted to wear something more interesting than black.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com.....9da6_o.jpg

Thanks!

I actually think that for a casual wedding this dress might work, but only without the sleeves. Are the sleeves detachable? If so, I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing what is essentially a strapless, knee-length dress to a wedding. The dress is a more casual in style than a dress I would typically wear for a wedding, but you said this is casual, so I would think it would be okay. The sleeves, however, kind of add a "tarty" look to the ensemble, so I think they would make it inappropriate for a wedding.

As for the boots, I'm not sure. I have never seen anyone wear knee-high boots to any wedding I have been to. I guess it kind of depends on how casual it is and what other people are wearing, but if it were me, I would wear pumps and hose (not tights).

Will this mesh knit top work as a "graphic tee" as suggested for many of the MOTG formulas? I would pair it with dark wash slim bootcut jeans and a leather jacket.

This dress looks more appropriate for an evening out to me. Do you have a jacket that you could wear over it?

Thank you all for your comments. Angie, I like the idea of swapping out the belt. It will be less coat-like that way. Rute, I tried it on wearing black jeans and it looked great but should look good with dark wash jeans and with black pants and pencil skirt as you suggested.

Louise--I have to empathize--on cold days, you need something comfy!

I just saw something I liked (that would be good for a moderate climate!) in Lucky Magazine--Norma Kamali's "sleeping bag coat" at Walmart. Lucky makes it look fab:
http://www.luckymag.com/blogs/.....is-35.html

And here's the Walmart link:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog.....d=11972496

So you can cozy up in style.

Hi and welcome to the forum. To answer your question, will you be going to the wedding ceremony or just to the reception? This is definitely not a dress to wear to a church wedding. Something that covers more of you would be more appropriate.

I understand the appeal, but I know that that locally (Midwest) the buyers who like FP get it on sale at Urban Outfitters, where it retails, or at a discount, at TJ Maxx, which at least for a while was selling it a season old, or at resale. I've had some FP that I've sold at resale, to a consignment shop with a lot of 20something customers, and I know how desirable it is. I can sell just about anything with the Free People label on it! But this market has a lot of not-at-retail price options, and savvy buyers.

I had it when I was younger and was given anti biotic cream. It seemed to go away with age.
You also might think about something you are ingesting that could be aggrivating it. Too much coffee or tea perhaps?

Thanks everyone very much for the help. It is in fact the Sofft Orea I was thinking of Marlene1. I love the simplicity and it looks like the heel is a bit chunkier which I like.
Thankyou Debora and Velvet, there are some adorable and comfy looking shoes in the links too. So much food for thought. Comfortable shoes are getting so much better looking these days.
Those Oreas are killer in the grey suede. All of them are killer but I had bought a pair of grey suede shoes with a peep toe which I haven't worn yet. Now the peep toe doesn't seem like a good idea in this weather.
Thanks again. You guys are great.
