25 Fall (Autumn) trends for 2010

I know, I know. In the northern hemisphere temperatures are soaring and the last thing you want to wrap your head around is Autumn merchandise. But that’s the way the crazy retail cycle works. So without further ado here are the trends for the next six months of fashion. Some of it is already in stores:

  1. Boots, boots, boots and more boots: From flat heels to towering sky scrapers, skinny stilettos to the chunkiest of wedges, ankle booties to over the knee lengths, super feminine styles to tough masculine looks, casual to dressy, black to cream, and everything in between. Start getting your collection up to scratch because your cold weather wardrobe will be incomplete without a great pair of boots and booties.
  2. Pants, jeans and leggings: This is not much of a skirt or dress season because it’s all about pants, jeans and leggings. That’s okay. Last season’s skirts and frocks will do just fine and I’ll continue wearing them and hope you will too.
  3. Longer and roomer skirts: I’ll believe that when I see it.
  4. Masculine shoes: Like flat oxfords and rugged boots to tone down feminine pieces. Love that.
  5. Leather or pleather jackets: A must have in my book. And it’s not only about cropped biker styles but rather any type of leather of pleather cover-up that tickles your fancy. Edgy, retro, classic or avant-garde so take your pick.
  6. Drapey long sleeved blouses: Love this silhouette tucked into skirts or worn loosely over sleek bottoms.
  7. Floppy drapey tunic shirts: Just as fab as drapey blouses. Have many and wear them frequently.
  8. Military influences: My all time favourite jacket and shirt look. Think rolled tab sleeves, double breasted buttoning, cargo pockets, strict tailoring and camouflage.
  9. Strong extended shoulders: Both on jackets, dresses and blouses. Another trend I adore and have been sporting for a year.
  10. Tuxedo jackets: I just bought a cropped tuxedo jacket and I’m going to wear it with just about everything.
  11. Green: Strong military influences make olive green a no brainer. But there’s also chartreuse, forest green and teal.
  12. Blue: In all its hues from the lightest of baby blue, to the richest of cobalt and the deepest of navy.
  13. Red and purple combinations: This is how I like purple best. Rock on, red and purple.
  14. Lace leggings, gloves and handbags: Expect to see lace trim on everything, not just dresses, tops or skirts.
  15. Fur: Both real and faux.
  16. Tweed Chanel-esque jackets: Fabulous. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale was full of them and that’s just the start.
  17. Sequins: Daytime sequined tops and skirts show up every season, but I see few people actually wearing the look outside evening occasions.
  18. Feathers: Expect to see bags, shoes, hats, dresses and skirts with feather trim. How do you wash an item with feather trim? I guess you don’t.
  19. Moto jeans: A fringe trend for the more daring among us.
  20. Capes: Cute when they are cropped but I will pass on huge overwhelming styles. You need to be tall to pull off a long, voluminous and dramatic cape.
  21. Muted tonal coloured tights: This is still not my thing but can appreciate the look on others. I’m sticking to black and grey hosiery and letting my boots and scarves do the talking .
  22. Structured handbags: Retro and very lady-like. Move over slouchy styles.
  23. Silver mixed with gold: I am a recent convert and enjoying the versatility. Can’t believe it took me 20 years to feel comfortable mixing metals.
  24. Waist-bags: As a bag lady I feel compelled to find the perfect one.
  25. Pearls: YES! The best trend of them all. Not just plain classic strands but as a standalone bead mixed into all sorts of new combinations on rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Clusters and layered pearl necklaces are big too.

Pick out the trends that tickle your fancy and add your personal style stamp to the look. Remember that fashion unites us but style sets us apart. So make these trends your own. I sound like a broken record but at the end of the day it’s HOW you wear something that makes the difference.

I blossom in Autumn rather than Spring, so I’m always excited about Autumn trends. How does the list grab you?

25 Fall (Autumn) trends for 2010

You have been preparing us all along for these trends, so I am not overwehelmed, and that is a good thing! I have a pretty good head start and am glad to see that some articles I started to accumulate last year, will work this year too. Yeah! Still want more boots, though. They are my new favorite accessory!

Oh my gosh! This list makes me so very happy! I am a true boot girl. I have them in every color, every material, every length. I dare not even count how many pairs I own. And I love them best with jeans or leggings so “Yay”! Blue is my favorite color and I have been mixing gold and silver for the past 6 months. I am feeling “on trend”!
I need to find a cute Tuxedo jacket and also a Chanel-esque style. And I hope to find some cocktail dresses that look like they could be worn on the set of “Mad Men”. Perfect with pearls!

I’m so happy with all of the military inspired stuff- and also floaty tops/tunics and muted colors. I’m planning on stocking up.

You’re making me salivate, Angie! Oh, how I long for tights and boots … it’s 105 degrees and humid here today and I’m just dying.

So many of these trends are familiar from recent fall lineups, but still such fun. Looking forward to lots of leather and faux fur, pearls, and drapey silhouettes.

I agree with Carole, you’ve been preparing us. I love military influences and have been wearing tuxedo jackets, shirts, etc for years. I’ve always mixed silver and gold. It sounds like fun – except for the waist bags.

I have been seeing some “jeggings” out there too. Gap has the denim legging. Maybe this will be a contender for fall’s hot trend list. Although the temps are high now, I am getting excited about my fall wardrobe!

I love mixing silver and gold (and wear a two-toned watch to tie it all together!). So glad to hear it’s “in” for the fall.

Now, If only I could find the perfect leather jacket in a petite size, I’d be looking forward to the fall even more than I am right now :)

Great list! I’m not quite sure how fall in AZ will be, but I don’t think I’ll have the chance and/or need to wear any boots this year! But that’s ok… I’ll get to enjoy some of these other trends! Like a structured handbag… ;) I’m also really excited to get some big chunky pearl necklaces.

HURRAH!!! This has to be your first trend list that doesn’t totally overwhelm me, since I actually have some of these pieces in stock already! I need to build up my boot collection, but I already have tons of denim and slacks, lace-trimmed leggings, structured bags, blue, red and purple items, a leather jacket and loads of pearls! A Chanel-esque jacket is en route to my home, as is a loose silk tunic with roll-tab sleeves. Tuxedo and military jackets would be nice additions, but this isn’t bad for now. A sequens top would be lovely for more glamourous winter occasions. I will very happily pass on masculine shoes, feather trims, long skirts, moto jeans and

…and submitting my comments before finishing them. :p
I was going to say fur (though I’m cool with having a faux-fur trim on the hood of the puffer I hope to acquire).
I’m wearing a silky tunic and mixing metallics as we speak. Yea for YLF for keeping me on trend without making it feel like an effort!!

Woohoo! I love this list! Boots, leather jackets, military looks, greens and blues, Chanel-esque jackets, pearls and structured handbags are all right up my alley. And mixed metals make for increased versatility although I think I’ll always prefer one at a time.

I’ll pass on real fur, capes, feathers, and sequins. Long/roomy skirts make me cringe. Undecided on lace.

Sounds fun! However, your list brings to mind a bevy of questions. I supposed you’ll answer them through the season. Did your MK waist belt not work out? I was wondering because I just saw it in store the other day.

Surprisingly deflated! I was eagerly awaiting the fall trends list, but…I mean, c’mon, fur, lace and feathers? Ehhhh. Sequined daytime looks? Masculine flat shoes (no!) Tuxedo jackets and capes? nononono. I can’t say there’s anything I’m terribly excited about or that gives me any direction…but perhaps that’s my fault for being such a late adopter of fashion – I’m only just trying leggings and tunics!

Although a bit crestfallen about the state of dresses this fall, I am going heavily for the skinnies, tunics and OTK boots look and am excited to roadtest it.

I would love to find a satchel sometime soon, and a military-inspired jacket. Otherwise, it’s all good — Bring on the blue, green, red & purple!

I’m wearing pearls today! Frankly, it’s hard for me to believe that it is so hot in other places as it has continued to be cold and foggy here for most of the morning and in the evening! What is up with that?!!

I’m glad that some of the things I worked hard to find last year (boots and leggings) will still be in. I feel better prepared for Fall than I do for the current season.

Here are my thoughts:

Boots – I have black tall boots, black ankle boots and grey booties. I would like a tall brown pair that are flat.

Trousers, Jeans and Leggings – have leggings, jeggings, and jeans. Would really like a pair of skinny black trousers for work to wear with items 6 and 7!

Longer and roomier skirts – do you mean more A-lined and mid calf length?

Feathers – one of my workmates bought an awesome feather belt last winter at Zara, I wish I had copied her, because it is an really cool way to wear feathers. I like the look of a feathered skirt with a bf jacket over the top…

Love red & purple and blues! Not so keen on the green (unless it is bright) and muted colours

I would really love a military inspired jacket and a chanel inspired one (if they are around in London) and I have a moto jacket – moto jeans are not for me though! I have wide shoulders, but they slope so some straightish

I still love the tunic shirt over the sequined shirt look from BR in one of your tunic shirt posts from Spring. Might settle for a sequined cardigan.

Yay to structured handbags, but I don’t think that I am rock-chick enough to pull off the waistbag.

Love the idea of pearls and mixing metals.

I could see capes as being wonderful for those that are pregnant!

Am trying

Hm, don’t want to be too negative – here are my fall trend likes:
* red, blue, purple and green – all good!
* Chanel style jacket – yum
* Boots – would like a pair of knee high casual to wear with leggings
* Leggings, pants, jeans – well, I’m hoping to get into the leggings/tunic trend
* Mixed metals – cool
* Structured handbag – not sure about that – I love hobo styles. :)
* Military style – like it in jackets with some restraint though.

I’m going to refrain from feeling that I need one of everything on your list this season. I would love to find a few perfect drapey tunic shirts to round out my jeans and boots. I’ll be anxiously watching the YLF store for your pics of tunic shirts this year (hint, hint)
I probably won’t run out and stock up on feathers ;-) I’ll leave those to the drama queens of the world.

Seriously considering a Burberry cape/poncho thing.

This is the best list ever! I´m so excited! apart from colored tights I´ll be weari´ng everything on that list! I´d love to see a new skirt length coming up – it would be something different (I don´t wear minis and that´s all I see so far) and a new silhouette, too…

PS: I´m wearing a safari-style skirt with a knitwear camouflage top with — sequins!

LOVE pearls, LOVE a structured bag. YAY!

I kind of like the slightly longer, fuller MadMen-esque skirts I’ve been seeing, but I think you must wear a heel to pull off the look.

Fur and feathers make me sick and sad, but everything else on the list is a big yay, especially all the fabulous sock-friendly footwear. I hope H&M comes out with a cute little waistbag. It’s not something I plan to spend a lot of money on but it will be fun and very practical while it lasts. I’ll be doing some serious damage this fall, although I’m sad to see it isn’t a dress season. I hoped to extend my frock wearing ways into the cold weather months.

I love this list. I think it reflects styles that I naturally gravitate to.
I love the mens foot wear, I’ve been tracking down the perfect pair of brouges. I have 2 pair that I wouldn’t consider the perfect pair, but I think they will do and I love them. During NAS I bought a pair from the men’s dept because they are gorgeous, and I know if they were sold in the women’s dept they would cost alot more.
I also have the boots covered. I will always love boots of all kinds.
Leggings, covered.
Silk floaty blouses from Joie, covered.
I am not sure what makes a black jacket, a Tuxedo jacket. I have some jackets that I think are Tuxedo jackets.
I think you have been prepping us for this all along, as was mentioned above. I feel set for the first time. Yea, bring on the purples and reds and structured bags, mixed metals, military jackets. I’m there.

Awesome. Thank you for helping us stay ahead of the trend curve Angie. I am looking forward to trying out purple and red this season.

So happy to hear about the ongoing love affair with boots, jeans, leggings, drapey tops, skirts, and leather jackets. In fact, I just ordered a leather motorcycle jacket in cognac that I’ve been drooling over for months (thank you, online sale and free shipping coupon!) and I can’t WAIT to trot it out in the fall! With a pair of boots!

Love, love, love this list. Looking forward to lots of boots, strong shoulders, capes, green, Chanel jackets and pearls. My love for fall and winter fashion vastly exceeds my feelings for warm-weather clothes, so I’m very excited that it’s “that time of year” again.

What a great list of ideas! I’m still building up my basic wardrobe so I won’t be looking for any big statement pieces unless they fit with that. I’m happy to give lots of things a go so will be looking forward to hearing Angie’s thoughts about the trends in detail. Love purple but have never made it work – perhaps pairing with red is the answer, so I’m excited about this!

I’m loving most of these x

I let out a groan when I first say this list. There are many, many items listed I do not have. I could spend the whole season trying to obtain them all. Although there are a few I’m going to take a pass on anyway.

1.Boots-Ok these I have, two recent purchases, one CH and one Frye pair.
2.Pants, jeans and leggings: I’m still working in this area to go with #1. I love that boots over jeans is still in style as I am just starting to adopt this look.
3.Longer and roomer skirts: Since I don’t wear skirts, I’m ok without this one.
4.Masculine shoes: I love the look of an oxford, but they don’t ever fit my feet.
5.Leather or pleather jackets: I’ve been going nuts for a quality jacket that will last for years and years. And coming up very empty.
6.Drapey long sleeved blouses: I have none and would love to own a few of these.
7.Floppy drapey tunic shirts: I would love to also have some of these. I haven’t seen either of 6 or 7 in stores that are long sleeve though.
8.Military influences: I have a couple summer pieces with this style but nothing that will work into fall and winter.
10.Tuxedo jackets: I never even thought about this one, hmmm…
11.Green: I find green tough to pull off if you don’t want to wear an earth tone color. Hopefully there will be some jewel toned options available.
12.Blue: I love blue but only have navy for fall items.
13.Red and purple combinations: Oh my never worn them together.
14.Lace leggings, gloves and handbags: Not a big lace person, except on a cami.
15.Fur: I own nothing with fur. A full fur coat seems a bit overkill to me. And a fur trimmed coat, the fur gets on my nerves after a while, whether faux or real.
16.Tweed Chanel-esque jackets: I am dying to own one of these and hope one of my NAS purchases work out for this.
17.Sequins: I don’t get this one, don’t they fall off in the wash? Doesn’t seem like a piece that will last long. Yet they are often very expensive. I would feel odd wearing sequins during the day.
18.Feathers: Oh my, this one I will pass on. My cat would love me though. :)
19.Moto jeans: No way for me, I feel jeans with embellishments, fading or other details bring more attention to a pear shape.
20.Capes: I look ridiculous in capes and ponchos. I love the look but am way too short to pull it off well.
21.Muted tonal coloured tights: I never understood the colored tights trend.
22.Structured handbags: This is right up my alley I do not own a single slouchy style bag.
23.Silver mixed with gold: I have two pieces with this look and it doesn’t bother me to mix metals.
24.Waist-bags: This is another one I feel is not very pear shape friendly.
25.Pearls: I am all over this one. I have real and faux, single stranded, pendant style, long and short, I love my pearls.

There are years when nothing in the shops or in the magazines tickles my fancy, but not this year. I am totally on board with so many of the trends right now. Love love love boots of all kinds, military styling is one of my all-time favorites (really suits my personality and body type), and I’m a big fan of bold colors. I am so happy to also see the trend towards structured handbags instead of slouchy. I really like crisp lines and bold shapes so droopy bags are not my cup of tea. I bought a ton of stuff at the NAS which I will probably wear to death over the next 6 months!

OH yeah,I have been looking forward to this list!!!
Missing some things on the list(feathers),iffy about some(drapey tunics tend to make me look very square and squat), and will pass on a few(no moto jeans for me!). Really looking forward to acquiring a structured bag(looks like it will be Kors Hamilton for me!) and adding to my growing boot collection. And continuing to indulge in pants, while still loving my shirts and dresses.

yes I am wishing for atleast somewhat cooler weather.hanging in the 90′s gets tiring after a few weeks…

Here in San Francisco we’re having our coldest summer in 40 years–and summers are *always* cold here, so that says a lot! (Fog, fog, fog, and rarely warmer than 60° F.) I’m ready to buy–and wear–a lot of items on that list.

Sounds pretty good and I already have a decent sampling of these items. I must be getting the hang of this fashion thing because in the last week I found myself thinking about my fall wardrobe. Thanks for the tips Angie!

Thanks Angie for such a comprehensive list! Boots, booties and booties – can hardly wait for fall. Longer, fuller skirts, got it, and they go with the BOOTS! Leggings, gotta love those. Military inspired, got my eye on a lovely longish coat, but it’s so hard to think about the coats and jackets while it’s still in the throes of summer here. Plenty food for thought – what will I embrace for fall ?

Like so many others, I feel that you have been breaking down this information into digestible pieces for us over the last couple of months, Angie. I’ve had a chance to absorb it and figure out what I like and how I would apply it to my own wardrobe and style. Thank you!!

I do so love this list. There is so much on it that appeals to me:

Boots ~ I’ve been obsessed with boots for a couple of years now, so this is right up my alley.
Pants/jeans/leggings ~ Fit my casual, MOTG lifestyle, and I’ve become a recent convert to leggings. Worn the right way, I don’t feel I’m re-living the 80s.
Leather/pleather jackets ~ I just bought a classic one at NAS, my first proper leather jacket!
Drapey long-sleeved blouses and tunics ~ *love* these. I adore them with jeans/leggings and boots ~ think it’s a classic silhouette.
Military influences ~ not my favorite trend for myself, but I did find a fabulous military-inspired navy blue jacket that I think will see a lot of use this fall and winter. Love this trend more on others.
Green/blue/red & purple ~ love all of these colors; am working mostly muted versions of these colors into my style since I prefer neutrals and muted shades.
Chanel-esque tweed jackets and structured handbags ~ I’ve loved these for over 20 years
Pearls ~ I think I’ve loved these since birth
Silver & gold together ~ that’s my good watch, so clearly another look I like

And as Angie mentioned, I’m working on figuring out how to make these trends part of my style.

Love the continuation of boots and booties trend- hope I can afford to pick up another pair. I’ve also seen a few mentions of the longer skirts- I actually like this look with boots (very seventies) so I’ll be watching to see if it really happens. The color trends sound gorgeous.

The start of a very intriguing season. I want more boots, military styled trousers, pearls (of course), blouses (of course), Chanel styled jacket (priority) and look forward to the liberation of mixing metals.

Angie, will you still be wearing your denim shirt this Autumn? I’m feeling the need for a suitable alternative, perhaps a tab sleeved military shirt could take it’s place?

Nice list! I am anxious to see how these will all play out! I’m not surprised to see any of these items on here.

How did you determine this list, Angie? Are they your personal observations or pulled from various sources?

I love this list. I want at least one more pair of boots, tunics and pearls.

I have to admit to feeling mildly depressed about the preeminence of boots as a trend this season (but it sounds like I might be the only one!). After years and *years* of searching, I’ve yet to find a pair of boots that fits well — I have super-skinny calves and I’ve never tried on a pair of boots that didn’t have a gap of at least an inch in the back. And yet I love the look of a good mid- or full-calf boot! Guess I’ll just have to appreciate it on everyone else for another year :-) . I do like ankle-length booties, so maybe I’ll pick up a pair of those, but I really prefer the look of a fuller boot (especially when worn with a pencil skirt, a look I’ve been dying to try… but which will have to wait until I find the elusive, mythical narrow-shaft boot).

Pearls are always on my list. :)

Of course, I want some flat boots to wear with skinnies. I love the colors projected too … blues and greens are my faves.

I’m working on more boots and pleather jackets. I’d love to add some floaty tops to my wardrobe. I still don’t have anything military or moto — we’ll see if I come up with something in those categories. Love that the colors!

Thanks to you and NAS I am in better shape for the fall than I was for the spring. I would like to expand my boot/booties collection, look for leather/pleather jacket, blouses and tunics, structured bag and maybe plum colored tights to go with my new booties but I have the rest which i care about (thank you but I will pass on moto ejans, feathers and lace leggings for now :-) )
Angie, I would like to know what you mean by drapey blouses and floppy drapey tunic shirts. Maybe you can do a post on them b/c I am not really sure what they are…

Angie, I love your lists and this one gets the excitement going. I’m especially excited to see the greens and blues, pearls, leather/pleather jackets and the tweed Chanel-esque jackets. I also hope to add the perfect knee-high low-heeled riding boots in grey and maybe black if I can find some to fit small calves.
From the list I have no interest in feathers or fur other than a bit of faux fur on a coat. I’m leary of fuller skirts although a bit longer (to the knee) would be nice, and of personally wearing drapey blouses and floppy drapey tunic shirts. I like more structure. I’d also like to see how you wear these.

Love your list! I always look forward to it each season change. Just yesterday I was looking at the post you did in the spring with your early outlook to fall ’10.

I’m still on the hunt for black flat riding boots for my narrow calves that are also the right height for short me. I have some to wear but they’re near the end of their life and I want to find a killer pair to replace them.

I’m really loving a lot of what’s on your list and have most of the items I like and that suit my style. I even found a 3/4 sleeve floaty tunic at Macys a couple of months ago that has worked for warmer weather but will also work when it cools down. I bought it on a whim and have been surprised at it’s versatility.

The one item I might be interested in is a structured bag. I’m a slouchy bag fan, but if I find the right one I will be tempted. I’m also happy to see that mixing metals is now in style. I’ve been doing it for years and always thought I was behind the times, but maybe I was just ahead ;)

what a great and complete list!!
I LOVE fall and can’t wait to layer it up and wear all my cold weather items!!

Fabulous post, thank you! I’m particularly excited about the Chanelesque Tweed jackets and hope to find a cute one (after the Hinge one at NAS sold out so quickly); and about the red/purple trend. I’ve already been wearing red and purple as a combination over the last year and just love it. I’m hoping the purple pencil skirt from NAS works out (just ordered it a few days ago, when my size finally became available again), and I already have a red skirt, a purple blouse, and a purple scarf. So bring it on…
What I’m curious about in a very disaffected way is the cape trend. I just cannot really imagine it catching on (and I sure don’t anticipate helping it) but hey, I’m keeping an open mind and will see how others play with it…
Also curious about the fuller longer skirts. I’m such a pencil skirt (primarily) and knee length A-line skirt (secondarily) gal that I doubt I’ll be sporting such new skirt styles, but never say never…

Yes, I very much love Fall and Winter. I already have several of these items, specially the more classic pieces. The trendier pieces, like moto jeans and edgy jackets are really not in my taste, but I’m looking forward to seeing some of these items, to see if I can find something trendy, but not too overwhelming for me, and that I can wear for a few years without looking dated. I’m anticipating the drapey blouses and tunics and I’m always on the market for more boots :)

Great list. Plenty of things I already have, plenty of things I look forward to trying/buying and only a few I won’t go anywhere near – any skirt length longer than knee but shorter than ankle – ugh; real fur; lace leggings; and waist bags! As for the feather trim … I’m not sure about that!

So pleased to hear your excitement!

You see Mamapicklejuice, it’s all about picking the trends that you think will work for you. You managed that perfectly at second glance :-)

RoseandJoan, that’s precisely how I intend to update my denim shirt look.

Shell, it takes months and months to compile a seasonal trend list. I start off at Fashion Week, take note of what high end designers are doing the season before, look at magazines and seal the deal with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I throw in a few hunches too.

Autumn is my favourite season for clothes. Still sweltering here in Toronto and looking forward to the fall. Green, boots and mixing silver with gold… what’s not to love?!

Yay! I have a new love affair with boots and leggings! I think I will be on the hunt for another fun pair of boots this year. :)

Along with my addiction to pearls — real or fake — which I mentioned in my first post, I have an unfortunate attraction to lace. I love lace and think it is lovely. However, at my age and state of shape, lace and pearls and structured purses and tweed Chanel-esque jackets — all of which I love — could combine to look dowdy on me. I may need some help rocking the fall trends without looking like I belong in a rocking chair. :)

Thank you for putting together this list, Angie. I have done a bit of my fall shopping, but this will help me fill in any holes in my wardrobe.

I’m very excited for a few of these trends, specifically boots (I got a wonderful pair at the NAS), longer and roomier skirts (short skirts are hard to ride a bike in), fur (I got a vintage mink at a garage sale last weekend and I’m in love), muted tonal colored tights (I’m a huge fan) and military influences (so fun, sans the camo, for me at least).

There are a few that I’m not going to touch though: feathers (seems impractical), strong shoulders (mine are strong enough, thank you), lace (I have two pieces that are lace and don’t see myself getting more), capes (I love the look, but it’s a lot of look) and moto jeans (again, I like it, but it’s not for me).

Overall I’m really happy with this list (and curious about how many feathers I’m really going to be seeing in the coming months)! I split the trends up into what I like and am already prepared for (good), what I have on my list to get (need), what I might try if the conditions are right (maybe), and what I’ll be passing on this year (no).

good
• Boots
• Pants, jeans and leggings
• Longer and roomer skirts
• Military influences
• Strong extended shoulders
• Green
• Silver mixed with gold
• Pearls

need
• Muted tonal coloured tights – I already have a muted teal color, but I need an army green color

maybe
• Leather or pleather jackets
• Drapey long sleeved blouses
• Floppy drapey tunic shirts
• Tweed Chanel-ensue jackets

I would be happy to wear all of the maybes, it’s a matter of finding items that are relatively inexpensive, don’t surrender the waist (for the drapey and floppy ones), and are work appropriate (for the leather/pleather jacket).

no
• Masculine shoes
• Tuxedo jackets
• Blue
• Red and purple combinations
• Lace leggings, gloves and handbags
• Fur
• Sequins
• Feathers
• Moto jeans
• Capes
• Structured handbags
• Waist-bags

Most of the “no”s are too casual or too dressy for me to wear regularly as a grad student, and so even if I’m not really opposed to the trend it’s just not realistic to spend money on items that aren’t highly versatile. For the bags, I’ve already got what I need (and I’m not a bag lady), so I can’t afford that investment. For the colors, red and purple wouldn’t work with my coloring, and I’m picky about what shades of blue I put near my face.

I just got a waist bag after reading the post about them, and I can’t wait to wear it out. There are some cute options!

I really hope the longer roomier skirts come out in force. I want to be able to twirl in them. They have long twirly skirts in summer, but they’re all made of the same thin see-through fabric in a tiered style.

Fur, lace, and feathers are excellent, and day time sequins I might give a try. Also, I love capes and I hope they come out with a big variety! I especially love the cute Japanese kind and the cape coats you see in Britain. A single color mid-weight ruffled edge medium length cape with 2 – 3 clasps down the center at the top would be great.

Everything else I’m all for, though I’ve never been able to wear purple and red together. I should try, just to break free of my style inhibitions. Thanks Angie!

Angie, thank you so much in your comments about the big shoulder trend for referring to your shoulders as “dainty”. It’s not a word commonly heard anymore and gives a positive spin to something I think many American women are told is a negative physcial attribute. I can’t tell you what your “dainty” reference did as far as boosting my morale! I’d always thought disparagingly about my narrow shoulders. No more! They are feminine and dainty, just as you said.

Thanks angie!!! Love your posts on trends.. here in europe I see a lot of brown and cream and lady-like style but new collections are just arriving to the stores.

These are some of my favorite posts Angie, I am always so excited to see them! ( Makes me feel like a kid getting ready for school in September).

I like most of these trends, and some of them, like military influences, boots, pants, all the colors and leather jackets make me very happy. I will be passing on fur, feathers, capes, colored tight, waist bags, and probably moto skinnies as well.

What are the new jeans silhuoettes for the upcoming season? Obviously, skinnies are still going strong, and there are the skinny cargos too. I have also seen a mention a=of skinny bootcuts as well as flares at couple of places as the newest thing.

I am also sad about the state of skirts and dresses this season. Though long live the rise of the longer skirt (not the hem, just the popularity!) I have so much more trouble with pants and trousers than I do with skirts. That will be one trend I will not indulge in too much.
Pearls I love, boots I have plenty of (though some flattish but feminine combat boots are on the list), oxfords I’ve been wearing for a while now, loving all shades of blue, and I am on the search for the perfect vintage fur capelet so that will be two trends with one stone. I enjoy lace, but it has to be an interesting pattern, or good quality – I’m fussy about lace. I am cheering the rise of the structured bag, I’ve not bought any handbags for almost 5 years now due to them having bobbles and buckles and fuss hanging off them everywhere.
So overall, a pretty rocking season of trends coming up.

Roaming this site is great….as expected. I realize this is an older thread, but I’m with pretty much all the style trends mentioned other than FUR….can’t go along with that at all! Add lace leggings to my nay list as well; shouldn’t these come with “age appropriate warnings” ;-) ?
