I love this article. As a budding designer I have found it very easy to dress other persons but dressing myself is often very hard.I have statistics 34" - 28" - 39" and I suppose I would fit into the hourglass body type.I do have toned arms and great legs so I can get away with shorts.I found that high necklines can be worn with my bodytype...the material should be soft and have a little frill tho...something sheer like shiffon.I have the cutest LBD with a sorta 1900 styled high neckline. Its about 4 inches above my knees and I wear it with platform pumps. It looks great!..I will be trying more of your advice from now on though.
Thanks :)

I had a question about the jeans. I am 4'11" and it is so difficult to find jeans that will fit my curvy thighs and elongate my legs. Thought maybe you could give me some advice. I really loved your blog!

Just saw this post and love it. I'm an hourglass who has finally learned to apply a critical eye when browsing through magazines. if there are fashion shots of hourglass ladies like Jessica Simpson or Jennifer Lopez, I pay attention. But most models are NOT hourglasses, so I've learned to not lust after what won't work on my body! Thanks for a wonderful post. :)

Diagonal detailing, especially silk layered tops elongate and flatter the hourglass. Big scoop necks are a must though!

For everyone with a large bust who can't find a shirt that doesn't gape and want's the look of a non-stretch cotton button down - Buy one that has NO fitting whatsoever and is about 1 size too big. Then have a seamstress/or yourself put in front and back darts and take up the shoulders if needed. You shouldn't need bust darts as the bigger size should fit the girls nicely. Or custom order your shirts.

Also, am I the only hourglass on the planet that looks horrific in wraps? I'm a true hourglass and have looked horrible in every wrap I have ever tried on.

Corsets on the other hand... amazing on an hourglass.

Fantastic tips! Thank you so much for updating your body type fit guidelines!
As a short hourglass with pudge around the middle, I've found success with several of the techniques you've mentioned, usually by accident. One thing about wearing skinnies as a curvy girl: find the right pair! Try try try and keep on trying until you get a pair with enough give and the right cut around the hips and waist. I finally found one, but unfortunately only bought the one pair and now the company doesn't offer them anymore. Boo!
I don't think I'll ever wear my skinnies with anything but tall boots--no skinnies and heels or flats for me. It would just look too disproportionate.
BUT! I have found that skinnies don't necessarily have to be paired with softer, billowier, or longer tops. My favorite way to wear mine is tucked into high heeled riding boots with a cute, fitted silky top and a structured wool blazer in a riding jacket style that hits mid-hip. It's a very equestrian look, but it really accentuates everything in the right way, and because the leg line is broken up a bit, wearing a shorter top and jacket doesn't throw things out of whack.
I'll definitely try to mix up my skinnies with a more laid-back boot and longer tops, though!

Fabulous as always, Angie. Thank you for this fool-proof guide to hourglass dressing. :) I'm afraid I'll never be one of your girls who delights in bending the rules, but it's nice to have tips on how to do so if the mood strikes!
I also love seeing how universal your guidelines are. I'm considerably larger than you and many of the other hourglasses on the forum, but every rule still applies.
