I have always worn a belt with my jeans, I never knew so many people avoided them for me I'd feel lost without one! I wear a basic black leather belt from H&M and not only is the leather light so it doesn't weigh my pants down, it rarely shows a bulge so I can wear a shirt over it while making sure my pants stay put without the belt bump. If I choose to wear a shorter shirt and you see the belt it enhances the outfit too. My advice is to find a thin leather belt, too thick strap material does tend to feel more like a mans belt. Skinny belts look great too, and most still are able to hold your pants up. I tend to avoid wearing belts in the belt loops that have too large a buckle, because when you sit sometimes they dig into your stomach.

Hi Angie, what might you suggest for post baby belly on a nice, tall slim rectangle figure? I'd love to create a cinched in waist by wearing a belt but am afraid it will accentuate my flabby bits instead of create a flattering look?? I feel cinching in with a belt will help create that hourglass figure as my mid section is quite straight... Just got a few flabby bit that sit over my jeans. What might you suggest?

Hi, thanks for the tips. Absolutely love them :) I was worried today when my mom told me that I don't know how to dress properly and that belts are only worn over long blouses! I was actually doing it the right way :P I feel comfortable with my belt worn at the right spot (about 3" large stretchy belt) right over my midriff extra bits. The large enough belt helps kinda blend my shape from mid to hips.

Wearing a white blouse with blue stripes over brown pants and black belt and a little worried about the contrast. I don't want any more attention towards my extras!

I am an inverted triangle with a very defined waist. I find when I wear belts, by shoulders look even larger, even though the belts define my waist nicely. I guess the only solution is not to belt to tight, just loosely, still, the shoulders stick out...

This sounds ridiculous, but I'm terrified of belts! I feel so uncomfortable, probably because of my great fear of drawing attention to my thick middle. I just never really had a waistline...even when I was young and skinny. I'm long-waisted, but I have a tummy, and not much going on in the bust area. What should I try?

Great Comments on Angie's guidelines for wearing belts. I like belts and always wear a belt when wearing pants with belt loops. I bought a fabulous stone turquoise Lucky Brand leather belt this summer and I so enjoy wearing it. But it does not have a loop at the through which to thread the belt after it is buckled.. What to do with the excess belt? I have other belt problems too:

Sometimes, I want to wear a belt over a top while wearing a belt to hold up my pants. However, I feel that two belts are too many and that I am only adding additional bulk to my waist.

Another problem that I have with belts is how to wear them with skirts or pants without loops. The belts always hike up in back or shift in other unsightly ways when being worn without loops. Doesn't matter how wide the belt is. Plus, I'm a 4'11.5'' petite to average depending on the garment and the style.

What to do? Any solutions to the above problems?

I just noticed the date of the article April 20, 2010. Oh well, I just got that off of my chest.
