This past winter I broke TWO major rules for dressing for my shape and taste. Because of my height, 5'2" (and 1/2), most people assume petites clothing fits me. It does not. My legs are 7" longer than the upper half of my body. I am very short-waisted and should never wear wide belts. Also, I make it a rule never, ever, ever to mix two types of animal prints in one outfit. To my absolute astonishment I was able to break both rules and still look chic. First, I maintained my column of color. The canvas (my figure) was head to toe in cream with nude/sand heels from Coach. I picked up a faux fur vest in cream with brown dabs throughout to represent (a rabbit??). So far so good. Earlier in the year I was loving this wide belt. It has an elastic back and calf hair front in brown and cream that had a "pinto" look or some calf rug. It looked very Texan ranch. The browns in both items matched and so did the creams. The vest was long and nipped in at the waist. It had the subtlest of flair at the hip. So, I just gave it a try and I was shocked and pleased by what I saw. For some inexplicable reason the whole thing worked without looking tacky and ridiculous. Furthermore, I looked like I had a waistline and appeared taller. I swear there was magic dust in the room that day!

I just bent my own "rule" this week and bought a crew-neck sweater from J Crew ...because I LOVE the color and fabric ("Tippie" linen crewneck w/ three-quarter sleeves in neon peach). I usually wear v-necks because they're right for my figure. But some things just bring me JOY and so I get them! (Stripes are my other rule bender. Whenever I come home with yet another striped shirt or sweater, my husband just rolls his eyes!)
