Jersey necklaces: edgy or awful

July 27th, 2009

Not quite a necklace and not quite a scarf, but a combination of the two. Shaggy, mop-like, grungy and bohemian, this fringe accessory makes a strong statement.

It’s not my style because I prefer a clean and crisp look. But I can appreciate the alternative vibe on the right person when worn with a flattering ensemble combination. It’s also reminds me a little of wearing a scarf muffler style.

So what’s the verdict? Can you appreciate the look, if not for yourself but on someone else?

I will say awful. I love bold necklaces and I love scarves, but this hybrid strikes me as a tad ridiculous, frankly. Maybe there are other versions out there that I’d prefer, but these three are just not doing it.

Not for me, but maybe with the right outfit, on someone with a bohemian/edgy style could pull it off.

I like the first one, but the second two remind me a bit of a lion’s mane. I wonder if they would look better with a longer sleeve?

What? This is an item I haven’t never seen before. And here I thought I was slowly edging toward my style goal of being edgy — apparently I have a long way to go!

It would depend on the person.
I have yet to see someone wear this and I think I’ve seen practically everything!

This is great for the right person in the right venue. I imagine it would look fab on Cat Deeley- but then again, what doesn’t?

I am most definitely not on board for this one! I love my necklaces too much and am not remotely boho!

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 7:26 am

It’s an interesting look for sure, definitely better suited for someone with boho syle. I am not crazy about too many fringes, plus the bulkiness of it makes me think this look would be really nice for when it is cold outside. Since I love neck-ware, I may consider it for the upcoming winter.

Ugh … those last two look like the girls are wearing dreadlocks around their necks. I don’t like it for myself.

I’ve seen some on etsy that aren’t so crazy looking like these:

I think they could work on a certain look and that simpler is better. It would be a fun thing for a teen to make and wear, I think. But I don’t think I could pull it off.

Why bother with this when you could wear a pretty scarf? Or a statement necklace? It doesn’t make sense to me. If I saw someone else wearing this I’d be quite surprised -I just don’t get it.

Eew. I LOVE grunge, but these are UGLY. The one on the left looks like a pile of udon noodles, and the two on the right look like out-of-control chest hair.

Oh no.My first words where “eeewww”

I prefer clean cut looks myself, the most is a little fringe on the scarf.
I’ll pass on this, for sure.

To answer your question: NO.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 7:53 am

No thank you, but a chiffon flower necklace would be cute

It’s the only fluffy, large kind of overwhelming necklace I’d consider wearing

I don’t think they’re awful, but I do prefer the first one over the others since it doesn’t look torn up. I think these would work very well on the right person. Who knows, I may give it a bash once I get a vest – for some reason I think that would work well with these necklaces.

I second that the last two necklaces look like dreadlocks. And the first one reminds me of pasta. I’ll be passing on this trend.

Sihaya

My first reaction was no way. I can’t get my head or my eyes around the 2nd and 3rd ones though I can see giving the first one a bash potentially. I would have to keep the rest of the outfit really crisp and clean to create the contrast is my guess.

Very versatile: when you fall over, you can wipe the floor with it.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 7:59 am

Pasta, udon noodles, dreadlocks, mopping the floor when you fall. You crack me up.

I see it the way Ana, Danja, Sihaya, Meredith and LE see it. Not necessarily for ourselves, but could absolutely work on a person with bohemian and alternative style in the right ensemble combination. Also, the colours of these examples are clouding our judgment. Pop the same look into pretty, happy colours and your perception will be different. (Thank you for the examples Whitney).

Remember how many of you were against sandal booties when you saw them for the first time. But changed your mind once you saw them in stylish action. Always food for thought.

Jilly, your comment is interesting. Not everyone aspires to having a pretty sense of style. Those who don’t are not into pretty scarves!

I like the orange one Whitney posted, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how I would make it work. I also like the recycled ethos of the etsy ones. Something to just sort of keep pondering, I think.

Of the ones Angie posted, I like the middle one best. That one I don’t think I could every make work, though I could definitely see it on some of the folks that come out to my hubby’s shows.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 8:17 am

Not in this lifetime! However, on a younger hipper person … maybe?

Ha, I am changing my mind immediately, now that I looked at the links Whitney posted and see the yellow/orange one (second link). Now how funky is that! I can totally imagine sporting that over a simple shift dress. Not boho anymore, but playful and funky (I think.)
Angie, you’re right – we can’t be guided just by the examples you showed. Those are very earthy colors and definitely not my thing. But a different color, and the playful flower element, can totally turn things around. Interesting, interesting…

I think a scarf would be more versatile but I like the look of the fringey styles (and the orange version Whitney found) on the examples. Not for me but something about the texture of the textile is interesting. WOuld avoid if it looks like something my mother in law made in her early weaving days (she used to make the weirdest scarves – bad flashback!).

I have not seen those before. I do like Whitney’s examples better, but not sure I’d wear this look. It looks quite young … cute for that age though.

Oh, I’ve seen these lately at Urban Outfitters. Similar to the first one, less “noodles” and combined with chains. Actually thought of getting one, they showed them with a long tanks, cropped soft jacket, soft wrappy type sweaters and skinny jeans. Very fun, with the right outfit, a yes!

Not awful in my book, except in bright colors. I can see this as a tone on tone look with the rest of the outfit being completely simple. It would add texture, definitely in earthy colors. The fringe could work on the right person, my favorite is the second. The third just looks like madi-gras or a child’s necklace and the purple and white is so forced and does not go with the look at all (IMO). I can picture it as a dramatic textural effect, possible with a simple leather jacket. I cannot see it moving towards pretty or cheerful at all.

Maya

They are not awful, but definitely not for me. The ones that are cut closer to the neck, and almost have a cowl-like effect, are kind of nice. These specific examples don’t grab me at all though. They look positively overwhelming and sloppy. I would much rather sport a necklace or scarf.

As Jean says they have potential as a nice textural addition though, and I think they can totally work on the right person. I nominate Jean to road-test this trend :)

What do folks think about this one?

http://images.urbanoutfitters......etailmain$

I love it and own it in the purple/pink combo. I was looking for a jersey necklace when I bought it, so it’s along those lines but a little different. Hope that it doesn’t elicit the sorts of reactions I’m seeing in this post…

I knew these reminded me of something. I saw these at the MoMA store and thought they were beautiful although I wouldn’t have any idea how to wear them. They are similar in material and concept but without the grunginess.

I would not wear these – but I could imagine someone carrying off the cleaner looks like the first pic you posted (white) or the yellow/orange one from Whitney. Definitely not boho look though – it would be funky statement. I wonder what happens if you spill something on these. I don’t think they would hold their shape after a wash!

Heh, I was thinking of anyone, I could see Greenglove pulling it off very well, although maybe not with the exact examples linked. It’s for someone with an artistic, earthy, layered flair — which is the opposite definition of me. :)

I like the muffler style better, but these seem like a natural hybrid. I can’t say I think it’s AWFUL… I just think it’s something new and different to look at, and it’s not mainstream (yet) so it looks a little weird. Honestly, with the right fabrics and patterns, I could see it working.

Why don’t they wear cloves of garlic. You get the same kind of look and it’ll still stink.

Not my style, but I’ve seen several bloggers wear the first UO one in ways that looked quite stylish and not sloppy at all.
I think that the scarf necklaces are more “me”.

They are growing on me. My first reaction is not a strong one in either direction, but I think they look fun. If I found the right one I would consider it. I need some funky necklaces to add more interest to my outfits, and I like boho. I prefer the ones that are mixed with chains though. I’ll road-test this trend, Maya… that is, if anyone ever hires me and I get some money. :)

They look a bit like a cross-over between a necklace and a scarf to me. Although they’re not my style either, I’d definitely like to see the first look (the one on the left) on somebody with a more boho-style. Or like Antje has pointed out: paired with an otherwise very simple outfit.

I have seen many of these on Etsy, in different colours (I prefer one solid colour, no patterns), and some of the people modelling them definitely pull them off with style.

Danja, Jean and Antje: I hope you post pictures, I just know we’ll be going “oh yes! that’s the way to wear this!!”

Angie, you really do leave no stone unturned. I have not seen these until now. At first I thought YUK, but my eye may adjust to the look for a winter neck scarf. I do not think I will be wearing it though.
The more calm one that Whitney posted from Etsey are nicer.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 11:42 am

The raggedy ones turn me off, but I have a Necklush (http://necklush.com/) and just adore it. I think of it as a scarf, though, NOT a necklace!

I saw the middle one at UO yesterday. I vote “awful.” I’m with Sher, that was exactly my thought… it was like something someone would make in craft class.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

I agree with a few of the others….not awful, but not awesome. Although the etsy ones are much nicer. I *do* like some of the leather necklaces I have seen around though!

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Hmmm…semi-awful. It’s a wannabe scarf. Why not just wear a scarf?

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I’ve seen a couple bloggers sporting DIY versions of these and they wear them well! I think they’re artsy and a playful take on a modern staple (namely cotton jersey and cotton tees).

Posted on July 27th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I have made two jersey scarf/necklaces out of old tshirts myself – they are VERY easy to DO as they are just strips of t-shirt material that are pulled l& them curl up on themselves – you then put them together for a scarf effect. It’s great for making the ordinary printed tshirt a bit more chic – which I also do with scarves – a lot of light ones this summer – but I DON’T like the beaded versions – too much like S.W. kitsch somehow…

I prefer a pretty scarf or a bold necklace. I guess I am staid.

In any case, the three pictured would be unflattering on my body type. They seem to add a lot of bulk to the chest and I’m already quite busty.

I have never seen these before. The fringe-y ones look more like a scarf than a necklace, but like other people have already said, why not just wear a scarf? You can be a lot more creative with a scarf because you can drape it a lot of different ways. That one on the left is just weird looking. I would say–not for me!

First response, NOT a fan! Skimmed through some of the responses & saw some Etsy pic’s though….hmmm….this might be a matter of the eye adjusting to the right one over time. Interesting! I’ll have my eye out for some to check things out now…too fun! :)

If there is one person I know who will pull this look off to perfection it’s Jean (greenglove). I’m glad you chimed in.

Those MOMA pieces are nice, Maya.

Sal and Rosie, your versions of the jersey necklace look a lot more wearable for the mainstream market.

It depends on the person, and I think they’re more of a fall to winter look. They’d look good with a sweater or a long sleeved top. They’d work well with jackets. The examples you show are definite no-no’s
