Fab layering piece: cowl neck knit top

March 23rd, 2009

Finding an effective layering top to wear under cardigans and jackets is not easy. It has to be the right length, colour, fabric, style and price point. You don’t want a top that’s too bulky on the sleeve. And an interesting neckline is essential because it creates texture and contrast, important elements of the layered ensemble’s visual appeal. I’ve found that cowl necks make brilliant layering pieces, especially when worn under V-neck cardigans.

Express has a winning cowl neck for Spring. The fabric is substantial, stretchy and soft. The fit is pretty good for different body types (I have tried it with several clients) and the neckline is superb. The cowl itself has an adorable gather up the back seam that allows you to adjust its volume. Make it stand up if you have a long neck, and flatten it out for shorter necks. This cowl works well for bustier lasses too. It lies comfortably above the bust giving the bosom a flattering silhouette.

Don’t be put off if sleeveless is not your thing. This is a layering top and a sleeveless item is just what you need for a smooth effect on the arms when you layer over with a cardigan. The fabric is a good weight so it shouldn’t be clingy, but even if it does cling around the mid section, this will level out when you add the next clothing layer.

The top comes in assortment of solid colours and prints like zebra and floral. At $29.50 for solids and $34.50 for prints, it’s quite the bargain once you add a discount coupon.

Thank you for posting this! I have been wanting more interesting tops to use for layering. I am stuck in the rut of the basic black or white cami. I will have check these out. My only question is whether these will work for women that have a larger bust?

I had already seen this top on the Express website and was thinking along the same lines as you Angie.

I love it that they have a good choice of colours, that it’s sleeveless (less bulky underneath other tops and cardis, and not too hot for layering in warmer weather), and the cowlneck of course. I love cowlnecks. They add some visual interest to an outfit.

What a fantastic idea! I adore cowls, but have relegated them to fall and winter wear – a thin cotton sleeveless jobber would allow year-round cowl fun.

What a coincidence,I bought the green one two days ago and absolutely adore it! It is indeed everything Angie says it is. I think I will be getting a couple more on different colors.

I love your favs too and will be checking these out. Right now I’d like one in every color! Do you think they will work with skirts? How do you get discount coupons for Express?

Now you have the ABSOLUTE go ahead on this top seeing as stylish Tanya has one hanging in her closet and plans to purchase more! Thanks for the validation, Tanya.

Violet, I had a busty client in the style last week and it worked. Cowl necks elongate your frame which is a particularly good characteristic for petites. Our five foot Shiny is the cowl and cardi queen! You know the YLF drill: you’ll never know until you try. I hope it works out.

Inge, Debbie and Sal, you’d rock this style. They have colours that you’ll like too.

RSRP, you and I are both cowl-neck top fans. Cowls are one of my very favourite necklines because they pack lots of punch.

I love cowlnecks and agree that the sleeveless ones are super for layering. The black and white one pictured is very fab; I had seen it on the Express website a while ago and wanted to try it on in the store but they didn’t have it (yet?) Angie, did you see it in a local Express by any chance?

Joy, these tops will work with pencil skirts, but they’ll be too long for other skirts unless you belt the look. I automatically receive Express coupons because I shop there from time to time. But the savvy forum lasses will help you out with access to coupon codes online.

Antje, I’ve seen all the colours and prints at our local Express ECCEPT the black and white print that’s featured on their site.

Thanks so much for this information, Angie. I was just lamenting the lack of neck line variety in my closet the other day so these are perfect!

I do own the black and white version you show in your post and have been having fun with it as a layering piece. Now to find time to escape to the mall :)

Angie-Can you give me an idea about fit. I’ve never tried anything at Express before. I usually wear a size small at most places. I have a 34A bust and a 27″ waist. Thanks!

I like this look. However, the amount of fabric around the neck gives it a substantial look that says fall or winter to me. Will this work as a spring look?summer look?

I love cowl necks and have added a bunch to my wardrobe over the last year. Unfortunately, the express ones are probably too long for me but I have picked up some fantastic ones in petite sizing from the Gap and BR.

There you go. Another stylish lass with one of these hanging in her closet! Thanks for chiming in, Dani.

Donna, Express runs a little smaller. You might need to try a small and a medium. If you wear an Ann Taylor small, you’ll need a medium in this tip.

Swirl, you can absolutely wear cowls in Spring and Summer. It’s not a turtle neck. That’s actually an interesting point of view. I have never perceived cowl necks to be a cold weather option. It’s all about the style and fabric of the item.

Thanks Angie! Good to know that these work for a variety of body types. I love cowl necks and I’m excited to try these on. I will certainly try to report back with some pictures!

So glad you posted this! I have one in black, and I love it with my gray microcheck pants and little denim jacket, or my white jacket and smart denim pants. I do feel fab in this!

I like the look Angie. Do you think this would work with busty women? I always thought cowl necks would add to my already big upper body. Thank for the advice!

I totally agree with you Angie. If I haven’t had four cowl neck layering pieces already, I’d pick up that turquoise one in a heart beat!

cowls look terrible on anyone buxom. i occasionally feel tempted and have to resist… these look bland though.

Busty lasses CAN pull off the right cowl. I mentioned that in my post and reiterated that in the comments. I had this top on a regular height busty client last week. The right volume of cowl has got to collapse in the right spot which is above the bust line – that’s how you dress a bustier lass in a cowl. It won’t work if the cowl is ON the bust.

M, when it comes to layering, a simple top is good. You’ll probably like the top once it’s layered with something more exciting.

Any Australians know a comparable version over here?

I was just thinking today that perhaps my cami was too low in the front to wear under a cardi to work. This will be a perfect substitute and a more interesting piece…Thank you Angie! :)

I like cowl necks too, and I was thinking I would have to give them up when the weather gets warmer. I have 2 cowl neck tunic tops and they are both long sleeved and made of a very warm knit fabric. Been wearing them to death all winter. These from Express look like a great spring/summer option.

I’ve been a big fan of this site for a while now – I love the way you think about clothes and I feel much more confident and inspired about dressing and shopping. I’m finally posting for the first time, but just wanted to let you know how much I love this website. Thanks!

Also, I love cowl necks and would love to pair a cardigan with this top or two sleeveless cowl neck dresses I have. I’m actually in the market for a cardigan that would work for this, maybe to belt the way you showed in the post about your new spring necklace. Any suggestions about brands?

Thanks Angie. I apologize for the reiteration. I should have read that line carefully.

Posted on March 23rd, 2009 at 11:33 pm

That’s great, ladies. Cowl neck tops are fab.

Nice to see you post a comment Jill, and thanks for compliment. It’s music to my ears that YLF had made you feel more confident and inspired about dressing and shopping. To answer your question, you’re after a cropped V-neck cardigan to wear with a cowl top and you’ll find these at most chain stores at the moment (J.Crew, Banana Republic and H&M). Skinny belts are everywhere! From Nordstrom and Macys to Forever 21 and Target. Take your pick.

No need to apologize Legacy of Pearl. It’s my pleasure to reiterate :-)

A friend of mine takes the excess fabric in the cowl neck, ties a knot in it, and suddenly you have a fabric rose as a feature on your shirt. Great tip for larger busted women!

Cowlnecks are Sooooooooo beautiful. How about Big double or high triple bending Cowlnecks? I have even seen girls with Very high UP turtlenecks under a big high cowlneck. WOW> How stunning. For examlpe Dark green turtleneck under a brick red double bending cowlneck. How about that?? And YES i agree that big busted ladies look very feminine in cowlnecks. Above the bust so that the cowl could be folded in different ways. Rib-knit is pretty i think.
