Jumpsuits

January 26th, 2009

The all-in-one jumpsuit is back in various silhouettes. From work wear and disco-inspired styles, to drapy palazzo 90’s looks. The belted versions look a little better than the unstructured styles, but I’m still not a fan. And wearing a jumpsuit makes going to the loo a chore. No thank you.

I wore both red and cobalt blue jumpsuits as a child back in the 70’s and early 80’s and remember them as wardrobe favourites. I have neither owned nor worn a jumpsuit since then and plan to keep it that way. Not only do I prefer the look of separates, but my bladder isn’t what it used to be.

Jumpsuits today. Although the flowing gray style on the right has a glamorous 70’s vibe about it, I just can’t do the look again. I’d feel like an 8 year old.

I must say I agree with you. I do not see why the jumpsuit has been revived. While I do like that grey one on the far right (it’s definitely passable for a spring cocktail party), the others are boring with not so flattering silhouettes. This is an outfit I would have liked to see stay in the past.

There will be no jumpsuits in this house either!

Nor here either! They just bring to mind flashbacks of watching “Saturday Night Fever” on BETA (anyone remember that from the late 80s???) in my friends in a rec-room (aka basement) during a teen sleepover party and giggling madly at the whole thing. Oh the horror of the 70’s disco queen!!!

My friend, Therese, recently sent me a humorous take on the JC Penny catalog from 1977.
Here is the link:
http://www.onmylist.com/catego.....log_1977_1

If you scroll down the page a bit, you’ll see our friend, the jumpsuit, highlighted in all its glory. I’ll never be able to wear a jumpsuit again.

love,
m!

I think they look gorgeous – flowy, elegant, long & lean lines, but completely dysfunctional. They are eye candy.

Only very few could wear it in their everyday wardrobe rotation.

I like the IDEA of the green one. For some reason, dressing like a mechanic has always seemed pretty cool. Still, I’d never wear a jumpsuit… it makes you look like you’re trying too hard to be trendy.

What the heck?! The only possible point to that third one is to convey “I’m so gorgeous I look good even in mechanic’s coveralls.” Where on earth would you wear that?

The first one actually doesn’t look half-bad. With the belt, it looks more like a button down shirt and pants. The green one looks like some type of paratrooper outfit.

I actually owned and wore a jumpsuit back in middle or high school. I’ll have to see if I can find the picture and scan it in. Oh the horror! Needless to say, these will not be making an appearance in my wardrobe this season.

The link to the JCP catalog is hilarious! I wonder what people will think of our fashions 20 years from now.

I like the one on the end, but I believe that only works on a few people (like the very thin). I won’t be wearing a jumpsuit this season or ever.

I agree with you. This is one of those fashion trends where I’m still trying to understand how it became popular again. Although, I have yet to actually see anyone outside of a magazine wearing one.

I agree, I will also not wear one, though the grey one is pretty. I have to admit that a couple I wore a black one similar to that grey one but with a halter top to a Halloween dance party, with fluffy tail and ears – I was a cat!

Jumpsuits remind me of old James Bond movies. Not sure why. These aren’t for me.

I like the black one on the left and the gray one on the right, but you could approximate both outfits pretty closely using separates. And, besides eliminating having to undress every time you go to the bathroom, separates are more versatile because you can mix and match. So this is another trend I will be passing up.

I agree from experience, jumpsuits are too much trouble. I do love the way the fabric drapes on the grey one though. The green one makes me think of Angelina Jolie in her wild days.
That JC Penny’s catalogue is hilarious. For all of you who were not there to witness the 70’s, I do not remember people actually walking the streets like most of those people. Those outfits seem exagerated to me. Does anyone agree?
I saw a 20 something cute little gal working at Nordstrom’s in a grey jumpsuit that was short shorts. Somehow it worked for her and she looked adorable. I pity her when it’s time to go potty though.

I, too, am NOT a fan … though I’m alarmed to find that the more styles cross my radar, the less I hate them. Am I destined to get sucked into a vortex of jumpsuit-wearing? And if so, will you throw me a line, Angie? ;)

Ugh, HORRIBLE. I’m not old enough to be familiar with the look, but I’m certainly experienced enough to say that this looks terrible on everyone. I hate it on the models and would blanch at seeing any of it on someone on the street. No thanks!

please! Not the jumpsuit! It’s just soooo awful!!!

I had the green one [third from the left] in white with lots of buttons and zippers back in the 80’s. I wore it with the collar UP with teal leg warmers and white high top tennies with pink laces. Don’t forget the big unmatching earrings and the even bigger hair. Sort of the hip airforce look. Not sure why that was considered a desirable look. Maybe I just wanted to look like one of the kids in ‘The Jets’. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm_QilrHkh8 ].

I won’t wear them this time around but thanks for the bit of nostalgia!

I won’t go near these this time around. I had a black and white checked one back then (same style as the black one on the left above except with shoulder pads!) and thought it looked great on me, but so impractical. The only good thing was the looseness in the middle worked while in early pregnacy and later when trying to lose the post baby flab.

“…but my bladder isn’t what it used to be”
You’re a hoot Angie;-)))

I had a short-sleeved mauvish pink jumpsuit when I was 10, and in retrospect I think I looked quite elegant in it (we were spending a week at the seaside, and my new Korean friend told me she thought I was French at first ‘because you looked so chic’;-). At the time though, I really wanted to trade with my sister, she had a baby blue jumpsuit that looked a little sportier.

I’m going to say no to the jumpsuit this time around, I shall have to figure out another way to look chic;-)

I had a denim halter style one in the late 70’s that I got alot of milage out of…but for me now…I’m over them. So many cuter and far more flattering things to wear now. Had I known I could look better in something else I probably wouldn’t have worn it to death.

Ridiculous. The third one looks like a sky diving outfit. And the last one looks like Charlie’s Angles on crack.

Posted on January 26th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

lol, agreed! I could not imagine having to practically strip down to use the bathroom.

Posted on January 26th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Once again (!) I can’t agree with most of the comments here. (Am I the bad style yaysayer or something?)

Worn correctly and sparingly, jumpsuits can be gorgeous, especially the type with wide-legged or palazzo pants. The best styles are the ones that channel the 1920s and 30s.

I think Gyweneth Paltrow pulled off a beautiful black halter-neck jumpsuit with wide pants at one of her Iron Man premieres, and Selma Blair pulled off this one with a tuxedo style collar as well, last year,. How is she NOT rocking this look?

True, Selma is rocking in that. But if I had that figure, I would rock in a food sack! :-)

Time for me to creep out of the woodwork, and admit to owning one of those silk parachute suits, scored on sale last year from Laundry Industry. It’s brilliantly designed, with an ingenious zip across the shoulder, so far from being a chore in the bathroom, it’s easier to get in and out of than a pair of belted jeans.

I wear it over a vest or t-shirt, and it makes me feel like Debbie Harry in Union City Blue. It totally rocks with strappy heels, gladiator sandals, or Chuck Taylors, and it regularly achieves fashion nirvana: spontaneous complements from random strangers.

So don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. Just sayin’.

Too funny Nicole…lol

I totally agree, way too scary.
There will not be any parachute jumping out fits crossing the threshold of this house . On either the inbound or outbound lane!

When I was pregnant for the first time in the 1990’s, I wore a pink and cream plaid maternity jumpsuit to work toward the end of my term. Between the giant belly and constant need to use the ladies’ room, this outfit was ridiculous! I hate jumpsuits.

I don’t like these. They are impractical, for the reason you mentioned. And if I’m going to wear one color from head to toe I’d much rather it be a dress.

Posted on January 30th, 2009 at 11:59 am

I’m with eliza on this one! there’s a jumpsuit in the lookbook for the upcoming Alexander McQueen for Target collection that I am just dying to get my hands on!

Flashback to the 90’s while wearing a jumpsuit at a party, went to the restroom and had to stripe down to underwear. No Thanks!!!

Im liking the jumpsuits. As a 23 year old i have never experienced them before and cant wait to get my hands on several, in different colours. bring on the summer to wear them during the day for lunch or winter for cocktails on a night out. :-)

I’m with you Sam! I’m 24 and the only jumpsuits I’ve ever had were back in 1st grade. I dropped the sleeve in the toilet and had to spend the rest of the day with a wet arm. So as traumatizing as that was…

I LOVE THEM. I actually faked a romper last year, by putting shorts and a tank together and covering the seam with a belt.

I just bought a jumpsuit this weekend, it’s a black high waisted halter with a palazzo pant and I’m really looking forward to wearing it. It’s like wearing pajamas, it’s so comfy. And I’m pretty sure I can do them day or night. I’m sold.

But I’m also a total trend hound. I love them.

I’m with you AJ–love ‘em. I had a teal j-suit in the early ’80’s with elastic waist, snap front & belt–even made one from tropical print–looked great! I can’t say I’ve ever seen any quite like the ones pictured. I think the key to the “mechanic look” and the gray one that’s so flowing is to have some CURVE! You gotta have some curves to offset the details on the mechanic jumpsuit and the gray one needs some curves to flow off of–both models look like waifs that someone threw some fabric over! The one in gray looks like she would blow away in a light breeze! And rompers–love them too! Maybe the key is to find the RIGHT jumpsuit, if you’re inclined to wear them. Is getting them off to potty any worse than getting a wet, one-piece swimsuit off for the same job?
