Bratique Helene: woven tops for busty gals

January 22nd, 2009

Today’s post is written by Nicole, a stylish East Coast lass, long time YLF supporter and fabulous forum member. Nicole reviews Bratique Helene, a new manufacturer of woven tops designed specifically for women with a D+ cup size.

As most of the regular YLF Forum members know, I am a busty gal. As most busty gals know, finding woven shirts that fit and are comfortable is a pretty tall order. Woven shirts tend to have very little give. Also, in order for a shirt to reach across the fullest part of my chest, it will be several sizes too big in the shoulders, sleeves and torso. My biggest hurdle with woven, button down collared shirts is that they are always riding up on me. I spend an enormous amount of time tugging the shirt back down into place. It’s uncomfortable and annoying, so I don’t own any woven collared shirts. Until now.

Enter Carissa Brown of Bratique Helene and Angie’s ability to bring people together.

I was honored when Angie asked me to review Bratique Helene’s product. After I picked a style from their line and provided my measurements, Carissa sent me 3 different shirts. Using photos and email, we compared the shirts and decided which one fit me best. I then had the sleeves shortened and got right to wearing the shirt. Here are my impressions…

The fabric is divine. I chose a plain white collared shirt and it has just enough stretch in it to make it comfortable.

The closure system is genius. Instead of buttons it has hook and eye closures. At first, I was afraid the closures would be troublesome, but they worked well. Fastening them was no more time consuming than buttoning a shirt, but the beauty is they don’t pull at the bust the way traditional buttons would.

The cuffs are generous, which I love!

The seaming makes the shirt work for busty women. The downside is that some seam lines show through the fabric.

The shirt works with layers. I tried on the shirt with a thicker gauge cardigan and a short jacket and both worked fine.

The shirt tail has a small built in peplum. I think the design idea was to keep the shirt tail tailored so it would look good untucked (because us busty gals don’t have a lot of success tucking shirts in). I feel the peplum on my particular shirt fans out a bit too far on the sides. However, my mother thought it looked fine and it’s probably a fairly easy alteration.

Speaking of my mother, she absolutely loved this shirt. A professional dress designer and seamstress for most of her life, she was very impressed with the quality of the fabric, the workmanship of the shirt, and mostly with the design itself.

For anyone who has a high bust to waist ratio, I highly recommend that you check out Carissa’s product line. Although the range is somewhat limited right now, she does have plans to add more pieces in the future. Her company is just starting out and I am very happy to see her succeed.

This is the best blog post ever :p Nicole, you look incredible. So sleek and streamlined.

I haven’t checked the prices yet because I’m afraid to, but that looks like a very good investment for me when I have the money.

(Or maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive they are…time to find out!)

I just realized I am not well endowed by their standards. The search continues. Well, I will enjoy them vicariously through you Nicole.

Is the seaming as obvious with a darker colored shirt?

This is so what I need, placing an order tonight.
Thanks, for remembering us busty gals.

Nicole, the shirt provides a beautiful streamlined silhouette! I do not have a large bust but I’m definitely going to recommend this to others I know! Thank you for the great review!

Yay, Nicole! Great job on the article. You look killer in that shirt! I want to see more outfits!

You look sensational, Nicole!!! The shirt is KILLER. Very streamlined, clean, elegant and flattering. You know how I feel about white button down shirts, so you can imagine how tickled my toes are seeing you in this style. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I can’t wait to see you incorporate this statement piece into your wardrobe. A busty gal CAN wear a woven shirt.

Thanks for doing the trial for Carissa and YLF. Carissa, you make a fabulous product and I wish you every success. Well done!

Nicole – you look so great in that shirt! I’m not a busty gal, but I will tell my friends about this company – it really does make a difference.

Nicole, you look wonderful in your Carissa shirt. I love the peplum back which gives the shirt designer style and adds a feminine touch.

Nicole, first of all, you did a fabulous write up. Very easy to read and very informative. Second, the shirt looks wonderful on you! I think the peplum looks good. With regard to the seeming that show, could you put a white cami under it as Angie has blogged about in the past? Cheers to Angie for connecting you two.

By the way, what was the cost on the shirt?

Posted on January 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 am

Hi Maya,

I’m hoping our prices are a good market price: longsleeve – $90, wrap shirt – $80, and sleeveless shell – $60.

To honor YLF and the great community in the forum we are extending a 20% discount for YLFers. We will process the discount internally so it won’t show on the website.

Please do sign up for the newsletter so you’ll be notified of sales, which includes sample sales.

Eva, I did wear a white cami.

I can assure anyone interested in this shirt that it is worth every penny. (and you all know how cheap I can be!) Can I just tell you how difficult it was for me not to post photos of my outfits with this shirt. I was dying to share this wonderful shirt because you all know my plight!

:)

Nicole, post those outfits on the forum. We can’t wait to see them! You’ve inspired many busty gals with your woven experience and for those who need a little refresher on how to wear a button-dowm, remember this post:

Dare I say you should consider doubling up on the style. Even in a colour? Pure duplication works.

Thanks for extending the YLF discount, Carissa. That’s fab!

I bought Carissa’s long-sleeved shirt in black, and I LOVE it! I have worn it with everything from jeans to skirts, and it looks just great paired with my other separates. (The seaming is less apparent in black than in white, if that’s important to you.) The workmanship is perfect, and the fit is extremely comfortable and flattering. I would recommend that any big-bosomed gal should have at least one of these in her wardrobe!

Nicole, you look absolutely incredible in that shirt! Do get as many styles and colors as you can. Thank you for the wonderful write-up too. I am not busty at all but still enjoy it, especially so I can recommend it to my bustier friends.

Is anyone else having a problem with the link to the site though? It keeps giving me fatal errors :(

Nicole, the short looks fantastic on you – just a perfect fit in every way and so flattering. I love that there is no pulling or gaping at the bust and that the shoulders and waist line are so streamlined. Maybe the seaming won’t be so obvious in darker colors – definitely duplicate!! Thanks for a great review!

Wow, that is a gorgeous shirt on a gorgeous lady!

Carissa, for your next market can you target petite women who aren’t quite as busty, but busty enough that XS shirts often fit lengthwise but not widthwise? ;-)

Thank you so much for testing this out – and too Angie and Carissa for bringing us a great product. I am going to convince my hubby I should have one for Valentine’s Day!

Oh Nicole, you absolutely rock. The blog post is awesome (it almost makes me wish I was a busty girl so I could really benefit from your good advice :-) ) and you look super duper fab in that shirt. Congrats for having found something that fits well, is comfortable, and looks stylish.
And kudos to Angie for handing the reigns to a subject matter expert for the day! I love it. Makes me feel even more excited about the YLF community.

I was one of Carissa’s fitting models, and as soon as I could I bought the white dress shirt and the teal silky shirt. I have gotten compliments on how I look every single time I’ve worn them … love them!!! I’m super-cheap (total discount store girl), but I paid for these and have never had a moment’s regret. Worth every penny.

Now, if the wrap shirt is available, I’m off to order …

Posted on January 22nd, 2009 at 11:21 am

Fantastic! I’d never heard of this company, but will DEFINITELY keep these shirts in mind for bustier clients. Nicole you look gorgeous in your perfectly-fitting button-down.

Eva, After looking at my posted photos a second time, I realize that the headless shot of me does not include a white cami. (It was also pre-sleeve shortening as well).

Carissa, what a generous offer you have made! I hope word of your wonderful shirt spreads like wildfire. I plan on emailing your site to several of my busty sisters.

I had a lot of fun going thru the whole process with Carissa and it was really cool being able to write another blog entry for Angie. I’m so happy everyone enjoyed it and I’m even happier with the compliments on the shirt. You all have made my day! :D

You look fantastic in that beautiful shirt. I want to tell all my friends about Carissa’s shirts.
Well written article Nicole. Is that jacket the one your Mother took the collar off? It looks great on you.
Thankyou Angie for this wonderful blog.

What a great idea!

Posted on January 22nd, 2009 at 12:21 pm

I like the article, but I have to point out a mistake: there is no such thing as a “D cup”. Cup sizes are relative to band sizes. So, a 60D or 60DD cup is actually quite small, a girl wearing that size would be seen as small busted. On the other hand a 90D is big busted.

I could kiss you!! I have been looking for this my whole double-d’d life!

EternalVoyageur, just out of curiosity, what type of measurement are you using? I thought 60 was centimeters at first but that seems much too small.

I have a fairly small band size (32 US) and I am a DD cup, and I am certainly not small busted and still have trouble finding woven shirts that fit.

WOW! I am so excited! Nicole, you look fantastic and the write-up was wonderful because it was 100% honest. I am always keeping my eye out for white button downs but have never had luck getting the right fit. I can’t wait to go home, measure, and order! (I feel like I might end up with one of each style and color!)

Carissa, thank you!

Eternal, I am confused by your comments too. There certainly is such a thing a D cup. Each cup size represents one inch difference between the band measurement and bust measurement. The band is measured under the bust, and the bust is measured at the fullest part of your bust. 4 inch difference=D Cup. Also, I’m not sure what you mean by a 60 or 90 in band size.

Rosie, I am pretty confident that Carissa would not my review to be anything but honest. Her goal is to make busty women comfortable in their clothes. The entire time Carissa and I were discussing how the different size shirts fit, she kept asking me about comfort. Comfort seems to the ultimate goal for Carissa’s line.

Although I am on the far other end of the bustiness spectrum, I can imagine what a challenge it must be to find a woven blouse that fits and flatters. But gosh, Nicole, you have done just that and then some. SUCH a flattering silhouette. So feminine, yet tailored, showing off those gorgeous curves. I am truly impressed with this look and your expertly written review. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Wow where have you been all my life!!!! I started sewing again so I could try to figure out how to make a woven blouse that would fit but I just don’t have the time!!! I can’t wait to check this out!

I’m a bit puzzled by the hooks and eyes – if a pattern has been designed with enough fullness to go over and around the bust, I don’t understand why this is necessary – I still want to give it a try!

Wow! What a great product, and fantastic write-up, Nicole! I always enjoy the guest writer entries. :)

The hook and eye closure is part of the genius, Mary. It prevents any type of gaping because of the added facing. I’m not well endowed but I have shirts with hook and eye closures and they are fabulous.
