My neutral mood

October 20th, 2008

It’s no secret that I love vibrant colours and enjoy sporting a few of them at a time. I’m not afraid of colour and this has been part of my style for as long as I can remember.

But my ensemble preferences have been predominantly neutral over the last 6 months. I’m wearing a lot of black, white, cream and grey together, with a focus on texture as opposed to colour. I do not wear black from head to toe – whenever I wear black, it’s usually together with white or cream to keep things looking soft and pretty. So my ensembles are still dramatic and contrasting, just monochromatic.

I sometimes punctuate my “new textured neutral look” with bright handbags and shoes, either cobalt, turquoise, yellow or green. But just as often with black, grey, cream or red handbags and shoes instead. These days I view red more as a basic neutral than a “bright”.

I guess I felt I was in a rut and needed a change. Who else is in a neutral mood?

I am also gravitating toward neutral colors. I find myself purchasing more black and white (I’ve rarely purchased either color before) and accessorizing with either my favorite pewter or red necklaces. This is a change for me, but it really seems to fit better. I thought I’d be going for fabulous gem colors (purples, deep crimsons, and emeralds), but that hasn’t been the case. I’m moving to simplicity.

Me too! I think now that I’m out of my twenties I’ve changed it up. I keep buying lots of grey and brown…but I try to do some great color with my accessories. What’s funny is, today I have on this wonderful dress that has shades of grey, black and chocolate brown. When I looked at myself in the mirrow this morning I thought, “wow, I look like a woman. A real grown-up.” I’ve never felt like that before! LOL

I am in an “almost” neutral mood too. I am currently wearing a lot of black, grey , cream and dark denim, here and there some brown and navy, and occasionally I’ll add one item (usually a top) in purple or burgundy or another color in that family. As for accessories, sometimes I keep them neutral and sometimes I add some color, but it’s also dark and muted. I think this is partially due to the cold weather, I would feel blah in neutrals all the time in the summer, but I am quite liking it now. It is strange how these things happen.

I’m there too … but fighting it! I feel like I must be a crusader for color, especially during the long, dark, cold MN winters. One of which is just around the corner, unfortunately.

All summer I was wearing lots of color and avoiding all black. It wasn’t on purpose– I just found it was my mood. Now that fall has come, I feel like I want to buy everything in black. For one thing, the fall colors in stores are just not appealing to me. Still, I’ve been a little surprised at my change of mood. I’m really liking grey too.

I definitely lean towards grays and blacks particularly in the winter months, with coloured accents in scarves, sweaters, jewellery or a big pop of colour with my favourite red patent handbag.

thats so funny- i feel like i just discovered neutrals and i cant get enough of mixing my browns, blacks, navys, & grays– emphasizing texture (with either bright accesories or neutral accessories). its such a departure from my usual look of emphasizing bright punches of color but i’m tending to alternate days i guess it’s part of a new cohesive color palette i’m playing with

With my coloring, neutrals don’t look good on me so I stick with colors. I’ve always loved color and unexpected combinations so I play with that a lot. I do think it would be fun to play with texture but my lifestyle doesn’t lend itself to playing with a lot of those items as they tend to be non-machine washable. I will be inspired by others and how they use neutrals instead.

I’m trying to fight my neutral mood and wear brights in an attempt to the deter the stress from the upcoming election and looking for employment. Most of the time wearing brighter colors helps.

Like Patience, I’m not finding flattering colors out there this fall except for some of the purples, so I’m buying lots of black and white or cream and brown which is better on me than black. I hope to add more grey. But I still enjoy a spot of color. Today I’m wearing dark blue denim with yellow and a bit of white punctuated with a navy and white polka-dot long scarf.

I always prefer neutrals. Last summer I tried to incorporate brighter colors but I am not sure I liked the results. I feel like bright colors make me look more exotic that I would like. This post is very timely and reassuring, Angie – I was considering returning a black sweater I just bought because of the color. Now I’m thinking I hold on to it. :)

I love neutrals (always! even when brights were the thing). My favorite outfits combine black, white, gray, and red. When I wear a neutral outfit it’s almost always with my favorite red mary janes, or a red camisole peaking out from under my top, or some other little touch of warm color. I never wear much makeup, but when I’m dressed in neutrals I try to play up my lips a little more to create some contrast.

I’m fighting very hard against any neutral tendencies. It would be easy for me to wear predominantly black (I used to for many years and still own a lot of black items) but I’m trying not to fall back on that too often. And since I definitely get a bit of the blues when fall starts, I try to add color to my clothing as one way to perk me up. I wear a ton of fuchsia right now, but also reds, greens, teal, and actually quite a bit of yellow for accents as well. Yellow has a very nice brightening effect and goes with many of the fall colors including fuchsia, greys and browns. Hooray for brights!

I used to wear a lot of black outfits, but since I quit that I have been leaning more towards other neutrals, like white, cream, gray and beige. I bought my first pair of beige pants this year (first light colored bottoms I’ve ever owned) and have been wearing them a lot. I find that I do tend to keep bright colors to just 1-2 items at a time. Usually, though, my bright color is a cardigan, top, necklace, or lipstick. I don’t have very many bright colored shoes or bags–only recently started expanding my collection in that direction.

Yay neutrals! I basically live in the neutral scheme, with the occasional bright top landing in my wardrobe. This season I am loving grays, mixed with whites, cream, black, and lots of silver accessories. I find that the combo can look so classic. Navy, grey, and white are also excellent and crisp together.

I work hard to keep texture in my outfits. I also find that combining three neutral shades, such as grey, cream, black, looks outstanding and maintains interest.

I guess I’ve finally gone native here in Paris, because this fall I am all about neutrals. But I’m not buying ANY black this year. My neutrals are: ink/dark navy, charcoal, and cream, accessorized with brown/caramel. I’m especially loving brown and gray together, which has never appealed to me before.

Angie, I would love to know how often you wear basic black dress slacks (not black jeans). Have long been curious!

As for me, I did like a lot of color this summer – esp since we had such a dreary, wet, dismal summer. It cheered me up! But now that it’s getting colder, yes I am gravitating more towards neutrals. I have bought several black or brown jackets in various weights, styles, and textures.

However, I am in absolute *heaven* with some of the rich fall colors being offered this season!! Teal, cobalt, emerald, purple, etc…. especially if in a silky blousy-blouse style….. and I am still very much in love with patterns too.

So while I may wear a neutral jacket and black purse and neutral shoes, I tend to punch things up a dose of some rich, fall color and/or a pattern – such as in a scarf or a blouse.

I did want a handbag in a fun color; but now I’m finding myself very content with my black patent bag, and using it quite often (swapping between the black bag, the brown suede bucket bag, and my cream bag). I don’t think I will buy any more bags this season.

I am a natural redhead (hence the truly original nickname, Red) I tend to gravitate to the neutrals, epecially brown, cream and navy. Brights scare me. Perhaps I am wrong, but I have always believed that colors nature delivers to us in October work best for me. I dread the summer colors.

i love color! wouldn’t want to ever ditch it! :)

i do like to pair color with neutrals, but i generally don’t do an all-neutral ensemble.

shiny, if i recall, i think angie mentioned once before that she doesn’t own black dress pants. but that may have changed since then…

I’ve never seen Angie in black dress slacks! It’s hard to imagine her in them.

I do too. I love how grey and black and white look with a punch of red somewhere.

I have always preferred black, but branched out this spring and summer into colors. I’m not entirely comfortable in them. I have dark hair, fair skin, and strong features, so I always feel that bright colors or patterns just make me look too – I don’t know – too much, too jumbled. I feel black (or a neutral) allows my features to look more grounded in a way. Perhaps it’s all in my head?

I would willingly wear less black if I could find more navy and perhaps gray, and I do wear a lot of brown, too – but I’m afraid I’m just not a color person! I have tried, and will continue to try. I own a lot more color now, and I actually like it just peaking out from under a blazer or sweater, but I usually come back to a dark solid. But – I do have a red bag and red shoes now, which I use with a dark outfit. (But not together.) I think I prefer to add color in accessories. I really have tried to be a “color” person – but I just feel more comfortable in darks/neutrals.

How funny that this is Angie’s post today. For weeks I have worn jeans daily. Today I am wearing a lovely woven white cotton blouse, charcoal slacks, and the black croc Franco Sarto bootie found here. Also my white watch with simple silver jewelry. Perhaps I need a bright accent color, but felt fab and comfortable all day!

There is nothing that oozes class more than an all off-white ensemble. Add big sunglasses and you have the look!

I’ve always been a big fan of black, grey, tan and olive. I have to force myself to wear color on a daily basis.

Also, since I’m not working right now, I’m wearing a lot more denim. Today I have on dark denim jeans, a chocolate brown tank top with a maroonish scoop neck top, black shoes. This is my comfort zone.

I’ve been in a neutral mood for fall/winter for the past 20 years! lol I can do brights for spring/summer, but come winter I tend to do camel head to toe, black and navy together, shades of brown…..with a pop of color in either the shoe, the bag, or a scarf. I just cannot bring myself to wear a blazing red sweater!

Surprisingly I’ve been in a neutral mood lately as well. Because it’s still warm here, I really just need a change. I’ve been wearing my black skinny jeans almost every day, and layer a black cardi over a bright top to make it “feel” more like fall.

Hee, interestingly enough, colors are my *default* uniform, and black&white is out of the box for me. I love how black/white/cream look on me, especially close to my face, but for some reason I have very few black, white and cream items in my closet. I’ve been slowly trying to remedy this, but I’m taking my time and being really picky. Deep inside, I kind of yearn to have black&cream outfits with just one or two pops of bright color.

For me, it’s not a mood, it’s a style! Today I wore a big purple sweater and a magenta and purple ombre scarf, the only color amid my black boots, black skinny jeans, black camisole, and black hair. Red and shocking pink are my usual pops of color.

Am loving the grays.
Especially charcoals and richer grays.

Cream/winter white (pick a decade, right?);D has never been a good color for me.

Black on black is so 90’s. I remember reading how in NYC people wore black in the summer. How cool were they. I don’t think all black is so flattering on the skin tone for me. But I do like a good black shirt or tneck. I found a short sleve tneck I layer, it’s so nice, easy to work in.

Love rich beige Pringles of Scotland cashmere sweater, one pullover, one cardi.

Neutrals rule!

I also consider burgundy a neutral. Or wine. I think both are a very elegant “red”.

Well, I’m not alone then. I think my preferences of neutrals or brights have to do with two things. One is the weather. Usually when it starts getting cold I crave neutrals and the few darker colors that look good against my fair skin, and this season is no exception. The second is simply the need for variety. I love brights and long for them in the spring and summer, but by the time fall comes around I’m tired of them and looking around at brights thinking that they are almost annoying. So I’m moody too. :)

Thanks for the fab response ladies. I’m not the only moody one around (nice one, Sarah). I enjoyed hearing how many neutral lasses there are out there.

I think that carrying a BRIGHT red bag, or citron scarf with my neutral ensembles keeps my colour addiction intact ( as you can see from this site, I love bright colours). I still adore wearing bright colours, but do not sport them daily like I used to – not even in Summer. My style evolved over the last 6 months for sure. It’s been very interesting.

For those of you that mention that you wear a lot of black, I hope you’re not in a black rut! Remember these blog posts?

It’s imperative to add texture to a neutral ensemble. If you don’t, the overall result can be blah and unflattering. Black is a harsh colour and not everyone looks good in black. It has to be softened and lipstick can do the trick. I see loads of wardrobes that fall back on black tops – I wish more people would fall back on white tops instead. I’m still very weary of wearing black and looking drab. I’m a little obsessed with keeping “black” pretty!

Today I’m wearing jeans tucked into grey over-the-knee flat, slouchy riding boots, a white shirt, citron and grey striped pullover and charcoal military jacket. It’s chilly outside so I’m finishing off the look with a citron pashmina that I’ll Euro-loop and a black cracked patent handbag. I feel best in neutrals with ONE strong pop of colour in either an item of clothing or an accessory. It’s become a signature look.

Shiny, I do not own, or wear black dress pants as Shell and Antje correctly remembered. This is not my style. I owned a pair of black slacks once at the age of 24 and that was it. (I do wear black gangster striped slacks and black pencil skirts, though).

I saw my girlfriend last night – she is very fashionable and has a fabulous wardrobe that would get a very high AAR. She sticks to neutrals nearly exclusively. It is very, very rare to see her in any colors other than grey, black, cream, white, dark denim, and red accessories. She does not wear browns much either.

I suspect the reason is that she is very fair, with peachy undertones. I thought I was fair – until one day she borrowed my foundation, and it looked like she was wearing that pink poison ivy lotion on her face!!! Being so fair, olor is tricky for her. She has incorporated *some* color – she has a signature color that is this beautiful shade of light green. It’s just that she has to look far and wide for colors that compliment her ultra-fair coloring.
